THE FREE PRESS NEWS FEBRUARY 2, 1995 A7 Charges, unfortunately, are just part of the job: Kuich Brad Kuich is glad criminal charges of assault have been dropped against him and one other officer.“l guess that’s what we get for doing our job sometimes,” says Corporal Kuich. “Sometimes we have to come under some sort of criticism.” Now stationed at the RCMP detachment in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, Corporal Kuich says it was difficult to spend the last year and a half with this issue dogging him wherever he went. “Your family is looking at you. Your coworkers are looking at you. Your friends are looking at you. It kind of hurts. It bothers me. You can’t help but be bothered. You put yourself in my shoes and walk around for a year and a half while this thing builds and festers.” Corporal Kuich says it hurt to have his reputation questioned. “I’ve been doing this job for almost 20 years and you go out there and you try and do the best job you can, staying within the perimeters that you have to stay within, and be a good policeman. And sometimes you end up with this big, black cloud hanging over your head.” Corporal Kuich politely sug- gests the media coverage of the case wasn’t as balanced as it could have been. “I’m not singling out anybody but, in my years of seeing what’s reported in the media and what really happens, sometimes from my point of view not all things are reported that should be reported. Sometimes things are a little biased, a little one-sided. I don’t know if it’s really intentional or not.” For example, he disagreed with the description of the police dog attack as a ‘mauling.’ “It was brought out in the preliminary hearing and it was verified by a doctor who had treated Mr. Moyou for his injuries, that it was not a mauling. It was strictly one dog bite to Mr. Moyou’s shoulder and that was it.” Corporal Kuich’s co-accused, Constable Gordon Campbell, is not talking to the media about the incident, but Corporal Kuich says Constable Campbell was probably more upset about the issue than he was. “It really hurt him. It really affected him a lot more than me, I think, for whatever reason.” In all of his nearly 20 years on the force, Corporal Kuich says this is the first time a complaint Maintenance worker dies in accident at Canfor mill A 46-year-old man is dead after an accident at Canfor’s Isle Pierre planer mill at a quarter to eight in the morning January 31st. And he says he’s certainly not the only cop to have to go through this. “In today’s age, it’s not uncommon for a police officer to have a complaint against him. And sometimes these complaints are justified. In my particular case it wasn’t.” But vindication is sweet. “The judge, in his little summation, said basically we were doing our job and there was no excessive force involved. It was just a matter of these people arresting this guy. We waited a year and a half to hear that.” At the time of his arrest on the evening of August 22, 1993, Gregory Dwight Moyou had an outstanding warrant on several charges including break and enters, sexual assault, and possession of stolen property.
