Prince George bird lovers found the same number of species during the annual count but doubled the amount of birds counted - mainly due to the presence of 3,517 Bohemian Waxwings. The 27 birders, who centered their search within a 15 mile diameter circled around Prince George Regional Hospital, found a total of 38 species and counted 8,468 individual birds. The Bohemian Waxwings subsists mostly on mountain ash berries and, due to the cold weather, there was a bumper crop in town this season. The next three populous birds were: 815 Black-capped Chickadees at sunflower seed feeders; 670 Common Redpolls, who prefer birch catkins; and 609 European Starlings, who are at feeders and dumpsters. A few surprises were the two male Wood Ducks chumming around with the Mal- lards under the railway bridge, three American Robins toughing it out and a Three-toed Woodpecker in the Vanway subdivision. The Count is conducted throughout North America by the National Audubon Society from December 16 until January 2. This year marks the Count’s 96th anniversary.
