A4 THE FREE PRESS ' MARCH 24, 1996 This space is provided as a weekly community service by Overwaitea Foods to salute people in your community who make it a better place to live Children’s fest back for another year It seems like just last week that it ended, but the Canadian Northern Children’s Festival is rapidly approaching. The festival always takes over the last weekend of May and, like the child’s crusade in medieval times, an army of infants, toddlers, teens and kids-at-heart will invade Fort George Park. Last year’s event drew 45,000 people - all there to see some of the best family entertainment on the continent. It takes a lot of behind-the- scenes effort to put the Canadian Northern Children’s Festival on. It’s been one of the top three crowd draws in Prince George, each year, for the last nine years and this year will be likely be one of the biggest ever. That takes a lot of organizing. “Right now we’re looking for volunteers,” says Jennifer Joe, the CNCF volunteer coordinator. “We already have about 400 in place, and we’ll need about another 400 to make it happen. The more the better. We’ve never had a problem in the past, so I know there are a lot of people out there who like to be a part of this.” The call for volunteers went out strongly about three weeks ago. The local papers were contacted, Cable 10 was approached for publicity, and applications were left off at places like the pool, the library, daycares, anywhere parents regularly take their children. “The best part about being a volunteer is getting to meet a lot of very interesting people,” Jennifer says. “You get a free T-shirt as well, but it’s a great volunteer experience, and depending on what you're doing you may get to see the shows. It’s great if you like kids. There’s so much fun going on around you.” Jennifer herself was a volunteer for the festival before she was taken on to coordinate the whole crew. She never conceived that it was so involved, but she finds it inspiring that all these teachers, parents, big brothers and sisters, and regular people want to put in a few hours to make sure the kids have a huge party in the park all their own. This year’s Canadian Northern Children’s Festival takes place May 22 to 25. To help out with the show call Jennifer at 562-4882.
