C2 THE FREE PRfeSS HOMES APRIL 20, 1997' Home Show ’97 biggest yet By MIA GROLEAU For The Free Press Started 20 years ago on the ice surface at the local golf and country club, the Prince George Home Show has grown successfully for the last two decades. “It’s grown now to the largest home show in B.C. outside the lower mainland, so it’s actually the second largest home show in B.C.,” says Marion Bartlett, chairperson of Home Show 1997. Run by the Prince George Home Builders’ Association, this year’s show will feature over 300 booths and will take up the entire Kin Centre and part of the parking lot. “We work really hard to preserve the integrity of the show, to ensure that we give a really good mix of exhibitors, but at the same time make sure we keep the key exhibits in home-building and renovating so it doesn’t become a trade show,” says Mrs. Bartlett. The PGHBA is entirely responsible for the success of the show, she adds. The home show itself is put together by a group of volunteers from the organization and they start meeting as soon as the show is done. “It’s really a year long commitment,” she says. Set for April 25,26 and 27, the show promises around booths with information on products and services useful to those interested in home building and renovating and to the home owner who is looking for new products and ideas. There will also be entertainment supplied by the Shrine clowns, and two main stages at the event. The first stage wiil showcase ideas and projects displayed by Shell Busey, a popular television personality who has a TV show about home-related projects. The second stage will feature a rotating schedule of shows put on by DeWalt Tools, General Paint, Synko Drywall and Jos Van Mage of Art Knapp greenhouses. “Because we have so many shows going on we’ve come up with a new weekend pass for the event,” says Mrs. Bartlett. The weekend passes and advance ticket sales can be purchased at a discounted price at Safeway during the days before the show. Those who purchase advance tickets also have a chance at winning a $100 Safeway gift certificate and can gain admittance to the show through an express line. An average of 20,000 peo- ple attend the show each year. The major door prize at this year’s show will be a play gym set donated by Beaver Lumber that includes a playhouse, slide and swing set. Besides providing a valuable service to homeowners and those companies with booths at the show, the Home Show is one of the major fundraising events for the Prince George Home Builders’ Association. “All the members are 100 per cent behind the Home Show,” says Mrs. Bartlett. “We have ongoing support of all our members as far as being there to offer assistance and fill in any voids that may come up.” The Home Builders’Association also sponsors a booth at the show where visitors can learn more about members of the association, and the group itself. The Home Show will open at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 25 and will stay open until 10 p.m. The show also runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. the next day, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
