A14 THE FREE PRESS NEWS NOVEMBER 23, 1997 Snowfall close to budget ceiling No snow is good snow as far as the city is concerned, but the Director of Corporate Planning is not taking any risks when it comes to the budget to get rid of the white stuff. “The fact that the first sowfall came a lettle later than normal doesn’t mean we’re out of the woods yet in terms of expenditures,” says Bill Kennedy. In spite of the late arrival of winter this year, the city’s snow removal budget for 1997 is already blown due to the heavy snowfalls in the beginning of 1997 and last year’s lingering winter. The provisional budget tabled early in the year provided for the expenditure of just over $3.3 million on snow control. No need to worry, though, says Mr. Kennedy. Because the city’s budget is in surplus, there is a slush fund, or contingency budget, that allows for just such shortfalls. “This is not an uncommon situation,” he says. Budget adjustments were passed at Monday’s council meeting that will see an additional $886,000 transferred into the snow removal budget that, barring a handful of massive snowfalls, should carry us through to the new year, says Mr. Kennedy. After being asked by the school board to take a second look at the situation, the City of Prince George will install an additional pedestrian crossing light at Winnipeg Street and 9th Avenue. The city’s Traffic Safety Committee conducted a review of the area and noted two problem areas on Winnipeg: The problem of traffic failing to stop for students using a nearby uncontrolled crosswalk and students crossing mid-block between the crosswalks “without exercising due care and attention.” The city hopes students will use the new crosswalk, since many of the students prefer to cross at 9th Avenue, rather than at the designated crossing point at 8th. The new light will be installed this month, weather permitting. Haul of Fame INTRODUCING THE 1998 GMC SIERRA.
