And the $54.3 million multi-year agreement inked between FRBC and Canfor this week should pay off in spades for the community, too. The five year agreement is expected to create between 600 and 800 jobs in the Omineca-Peace region, says Jerry Deere, Canfor’s vice-president of fibre supply. “The positive thing from Ken Pendergast my standpoint is that the money will be going toward jobs. It’s nice to be able to invest in people and the communities in our area,” says Mr. Deere. The jobs will be considered part of the Jobs and Timber Accord, and as such funding will be tied loosely to job creation, says Ken Pendergast, regional director for the local FRBC office. The agreement is the largest of its kind with a single licencee in the Omineca-Peace region, and the first of many multi-year agreements. 1998 marks the first year FRBC introduced multiyear agreements into its strategic planning with the Crown corporation’s latest budget, announced two weeks ago. The emphasis on long-term planning will provide a “more predictable and consistent approach to renewing our forest sector,” says Paul Ramsey, Prince George-North MLA. All of the $54.3 million will be devoted to land-based activities such as backlog silviculture, enhanced forestry, operational inventory and watershed restoration. A total of $13.5 million is expected to be spent in 1998. *AFTEKSIOO MAIL N REBATE It's portable and mobile, install it outside your home, connect the receiver to your TV, and you'll pick up the finest in home video!
