Founded in 1968 by a group of parents who needed a community resource for their children, the Child Development Centre is now housed in a spacious centre on Strathcona Avenue. As well as providing a number of Centre-based programs, the CDC also has an Adult Independent Living Service. Offering these services and programs requires funding, and although the provincial government contributions make up about 70 per cent of the CDC operating budget, there's always the need for more funds. To help itself out, and have a bit of fun at the same time, the CDC puts on the annual Great Northern Duck race. In this event, six thousand numbered wooden ducks are put up for sale. A $3.00 ticket buys a duck number. On July 1st, the ducks are dumped into the Fraser River from the Yellowhead Bridge, they float down to Hudson's Bay slough, where they are scooped out by crews waiting in river boats. The first four ducks to cross are the winners, with the duck's owners being identified by the duck's number. It's a fun event, it returns $15,000 to the CDC, but it also takes a tremendous volunteer effort to pull it off. The Pas lumber supplies the wood for the ducks. The wood is fashioned into ducks at the Prince George Youth Containment Centre. Sales volunteers begin selling ducks four months ahead of the event. R.F. Klein and Sons provide the two front end loaders that drop the ducks in the Fraser River, and the river boat finish-line crew are all volunteers. The river boat crews must also collect the other 5,996 ducks and this happens with surprisingly few runaways. Then it’s off to the hall of the West Side Family Fellowship Church where CDC and church volunteers count the ducks and ready them for next year's race. The is the ninth annual Great Northern Duck Race, it's a great event, it's profitable and it wouldn't happen at all if weren't for a wonderful group of dedicated volunteers. Kim Cheeklev shows off just a few of I volunteers made for the 9th Annual G Northern Duck Race.
