However, Mr. Cormier was acquitted of the charges because he “honestly believes he had the rightful ownership of the land.” Mr. Cormier once again cut more trees in the area, and was once again arrested. Mr. Cormier and some supporters have allegedly caused Slocan a tremendous amount of grief in that area as of late, building trenches across the road Slocan employees use to gain access to the cut block, and putting up a pole barrier in the road. Call centres would be good for economy Mr. McMann doesn’t know whether Prince George could beat out the competition for the call centres. If Prince George didn’t participate in the strategy, however, Mr. McMann is sure that “from BC Telecom’s standpoint all activities to do with call centres would be directed away from Prince George.” Prince George will definitely be up against serious competition within the province. Kelowna, Kamloops, Victoria, Nanaimo and the communities in the Greater Vancouver Regional District have all agreed to participate. As it is, Prince George was lucky to have been invited to participate in the strategy. In a letter to council Mr. McMann added that the initiative should provide an opportunity to profile and market Prince George to an international audience even if the community isn’t successful in attracting a centre. Mr. McMann hopes that a representative from Prince George will sit on the joint steering committee which will manage the project. T\vo thousand dollars of each community’s $10,000 contribution will go towards promotional advertising while $8,000 will go towards a study on the relative cost advantages of locating in B.C. It is expected the province and BC Tel will make significant financial contributions to the project.
