B8 THE FREE PRESS SPORTS JANUARY 7, 1999 P.G. Savings bantams give up goals The Prince George Savings Cougars major bantam hockey team feel they nave improved themselves by taking 32 goals and 69 points out of their lineup. The Cats cut their leading scorer, 14-year-old Aaron Hareuther, for "discipline reasons” after the round-robin at a recent AAA tournament in Lethbridge. Prince George went 1-3 in the round-robin, barely Squeaking into the playoffs but then, with Hareuther in the bleachers, won the tournament with three straight playoff victories. “He’s the leading scorer on our team,” says coach Sean Sean Lebrun Lebrun. “But with him out of the lineup, we won the tournament. He scores lots of goals but we didn’t seem to miss him in the last few games. You just have weigh the good and the bad.” The Cats lost 6-2 to Este-van, fell 5-3 to Lethbridge, beat Calgary Royals Gold 6-2 and fell 4-2 to the Calgary Stampeders in the round-robin. After cutting Hareuther, the team went on a tear. They defeated Calgary Royals Blue 5-4 in overtime in the quarterfinals on the strength of Paul Brown’s winner in the extra frame. They got past Estevan 5-3 in the semi-finals and then defeated the Stampeders 5-2 in the finals, which went on New Year’s Eve. Blair Lefebvre got the winner in the final while Brown scored the winning goal in the Cats’ three other victories. The win firmly establishes the Cougars as one of the top bantam AAA teams in B.C. “It gives us credibility,” says Lebrun. “We don’t get a lot of respect because we’re from Prince George and we play in a bush league. Winning this tournament will help us get into other top tournaments.” Hareuther will likely go to the Farr Fabricating Cougars minor bantam team where coach Dave Smith says he will help their already effective offence. Smith, who coached Hareuther on last year’s peewee provincial championship team, acknowledges the teenager has a discipline problem and isn’t too surprised Prince George Savings cut him loose. m DARRELL HUBBELL (@j DESIGNER GOLDSMITH N ONE • OF • A • KIND U SINCE 19M ART WITHOUT LIMITS We hope all of your We wish a desires are met in HAPPY the new year NEW YEAR (Blown glass, fused glass, to ALL soapstone carvings, raku and lots more) www.pgmoneysaver.bc.ca/goldarl 255 QUEBEC ST., PRINCE GEORGE • 563-6663 Seamless Bathwalls • 300+ Colours • Custom Formed - I Piece • Durable & Easy to Clean • Match Vanities Telephone Art 562-9290 Cottage Gallery & Framing Professional Custom Picture Framing • Dismounting, Laminating • Nccdlcart, Papertole • Limited Editions, Originals • Conservation Framing Phone Peggy 964-7667 9{ot ‘lust Tt ‘Tan, It s SAn “Awesome ‘Tan • Open Seven Days A Week - Air Conditioned - Easy Parking - Friendly Staff - Meticulously Clean -10 Wolff Tanning Beds Minute and Monthly Packages Available 3133 E. Farr Fabricating won 7-4 and 8-2 to finish third in the league, thus avoiding a first-round playoff matchup with Prince George Savings. “We went down there this weekend with that in mind,” says Smith. “Our biggest goal at the start of the year was to not play our major team in the first round. Now that we’ve accomplished that, it gives us a good chance to get an extra round in the playoffs.” Farr Fabricating opens the local tournament at 2:30 p.m. Thursday against Kitimat in Kin I while Prince George Savings take on Kimberly in its first game at 2:45 Thursday in Kin 11. The feature game of the round-robin has Prince George Savings taking on Kamloops at 7 p.m. Saturday in Kin I.
