B2 THE FREE PRESS ENTERTAINMENT JULY 15, 1999 AIC box set worth cardboard Here’s a quick Alice In Chains (AIC) timeline: formed in Seattle in 1987, they were signed in 1990. The first EP We Die Young was released in 1990, the debut Facelift was released in 1990, SAP was released in 1991, Dirt was released in 1992, Jar Of Flies was released in 1994, the selftitled effort was released in 1995, and Unplugged was released in 1996. Jerry Cantrell (the obvious creative powerhouse of AIC) then released his solo debut Boggy Depot in 1997. And now we have “Nothing Safe - The Best Of The Box". The FULL box set will hit stores on September 21, along with a release of all the band’s videos. I will not question Alice In Chains' importance to what happened musically in the 90’s, hut I am questioning the release of a box set. They haven't given us enough for a box set. Why not give us something new? There’s only one new tune on Nothing Safe, a track called “Get Born Again”. Outside of Cantrell’s solo work it’s been almost five years since we’ve had new AIC, Unplugged being all re-worked AIC. I felt a little cheated when I heard what their plans were for 1999. Face Down. 1 don’t think kids this age should be allowed to get to the point that Serial Joe has reached in the music industry. The music biz is a nasty trade. Think of all the artists in their 20’s that can’t handle it. To expect a 15-year-old to deal with the rock and roll jungle is a lot to ask. Case in point. Daniel Johns of Silverchair, a child rock star that would run out of the room every time the phone rang; a kid rocker now battling an eating disorder. Do you think that fronting an internationally successful rock band when he was still out-growing a pair of sneakers every six months had anything to do with it? Serial Joe just wrapped up a second stage tour across the country with Edgefest. The headliner of this show was Hole, fronted by Courtney Love. Courtney would make an excellent role model. Just think of the things she could teach a young rock star. I'm not saying kids shouldn’t be allowed to be musicians. Let them open for Uncle Ned’s Elvis tribute band at the Kiwanis Club, but don’t let them sign record deals and make albums. When they hit eighteen, kick them out of the house, let them pierce whatever kids are sticking holes into now, and send them on their way. I’ll take the dad hat off for a minute and tell you what I think of Face Down. I like it. It sounds like they can actually write and play. You can tell they listen to Rage Against The Machine, Limp Bizkit, and Silverchair, but they throw their own youthful talent into the mix. Whether they’re ready for it or not, the first single, “Mistake”, from Face Down is going to make these little punks rock stars. <-AduQt
