THE FREE PRESS SPORTS SEPTEMBER 19, 1999 B5 Moto-X goes back to roots Motocrossers at Gravel Pit Lake today will be subjected to steep hills, swamp, bog. fallen trees, jumps, and the occasional thirty-ought-six packing hunter. It’s hunting season. But it’s also time for the Bednesti Cross Country Motocross Race. Under various guises and names the race has been going on for many years. But nearly always located out at the Gravel Pit Lake site. “It has all sorts of little fire roads, and trails, and game trails,” says race organizer Tom Williams. "The kind of racing we do is one-on-one. Man against the terrain.” So far Williams has been doing most of the preparatory work himself. Building additions, and jumps, and marking out the track with arrows and ribbons. He doesn’t expect too many of the trail fighting racers will go off the track and get lost, though that has happened in past years. “Nobody should really get lost,” he says. “Because most of the trails end up back at the lake. But it sometimes happens.” The battle with the trail, however, has spilled over into a battle for entrants. Williams expects to see about 50 riders out but is uncertain if that many will actually show. The club has been handing out flyers around northern B.C. communities like Lillooet and Vanderhoof in an attempt to bring attention to the event. But the number of participants won’t be known until race time. TALKING YELLOW PAGES pgj|5 6 4 - 2 9 2 9 Good Call! Your FREE 24 hour Information Source! Ur yj^r The Bednesti cross-country motocross race Is man and machine against the elements. John McKenzie/Free Press Williams hopes that next year the club can get the Bednesti race sanctioned by the Canadian Motocross Association. The idea is to attract racers with points. And, by Williams account, if guys need points they will come. “I was at a race in Lillooet earlier this year,” he says. “There were 150 riders. It was just incredible." The process for putting on a race like this is pretty involved. Permission for land use has to be gotten from the Ministry of Forests, Crown Lands, and private property owners. Sweep riders need to be there to go out and find lost riders or people who are stuck. And then there is the insurance, promotions, and fundraising aspect. All of this would be for naught if there wasn’t a group of dedicated enthusiasts like Williams. ‘This kind of racing can be moved anywhere,” he says. “In the early ’70s they had guys that 1 know their dads were racing. There’s more and more people who are getting into motocross.” The trail is about 25 kilometres long and the race will be a timed three-hour event beginning at noon today. To view it, travel 40 kilometres west of town towards Vanderhoof to Gravel Pit lake. Signs wil! be posted. You hold the cure.
