20 THE FREE PRESS SPORTS JANUARY 23, 2000 CANr(foR Cantor CEO David Emerson, centre, just one of the boys at the Coliseum. John mckenzie/free press Canfor makes sport a little safer Two things are obvious watching David Emerson skate — he’s no stranger to hockey, but he hasn’t played it for a long time. “I last played about 35 years ago,” the Canfor president and chief executive officer gasped this week as he played shinny with some local hockey players during a news conference at the Prince George Coliseum. The former Edmonton Oil Kings Junior B player was in town to announce Canfor is donating 500 first aid kits to local groups as part of its community sports safety initiative. Under the $50,000 program, one of the city’s biggest employers is giving the kits to 14 local sports associations, School District 57, private schools and commu- nity associations. Starting next month, Canfor will also sponsor first aid training conducted by St. John Ambulance for about 150 local coaches. The company will donate facilities and staff time to conduct two four-hour first aid seminars. Coaches interested in attending the seminar should contact their local sports association, which in turn will contact Canfor. “Safety is the No. 1 priority at Canfor,” Mr. Emerson says in a news release. “We are proud of our safety record and we want to promote our philosophy about safety within the communities in which we work. We feel that through educating the coaches and providing the first aid kits to local teams, we are not only promoting safety but displaying to the community that safety does come first at Canfor.” Also during the news conference, Canfor announced that for the seventh straight year, its Prince George and Incontinental pulp mills achieved the highest safety rankings in the B.C. pulp and paper industry. During the coming weeks, Mr. Emerson will present the President’s Safety Award, which will recognize the two mills and their employees. Get on target with archers If you have a hankering to be a modern-day Robin Hoed, here’s your chance, at least from an archery standpoint. The Midnight Archers gather every Friday at 7 p.m. to shoot 3D silhouette targets. It costs $2 a round or $5 for three rounds. The shooting range is at 955 First Avenue. It’s above Budget Mini Storage. The door is on First, just east of Queensway. Everyone is welcome. Spruce City Minor Boys Fastball L ANNOUNCEMENT Annual General Meeting Tues.
