Crown still considering label of dangerous offender for Wells The courts will know for certain on March 10 if the Crown intends to pursue dangerous offender status again for a former Newfoundland man convicted of sex assault-related charges. Justice Eric Chamberlist convicted Sidney Wells last November on two counts of sexual touching, while conditionally staying two counts of sexual interference. The convictions relate to two young boys in Hixon in the summer of 1992. Mr. Wells had come to Hixon from Calgary A Prince George jury had already convicted Mr, Wells once of the charges and the Crown successfully had him declared a dangerous offender. But last year, the Supreme Court of Canada ordered a new trial and, with that, the dangerous offender designation was dropped. The Crown in the newest trial has indicated it wants to pursue the designation for a second time, but needs to clear two hurdles: approval from the Attorney General’s ministry and a psychiatric assessment. If the Crown proceeds as it hopes, time has been set aside in August for the hearing.
