Adventure on the High Seas
 UNBC student earns right to take part in millennium tall ship voyage
     Philip Cox is shipping out this month. Before he comes back to land-locked Prince George he will hit exotic ports of call up and down the eastern seaboard. This isn’t some cushy Caribbean cruise, though. Philip will be hoisting mainsails, swabbing the poop deck and clambering up the rigging to the crow’s nest all the way from Lunenburg to Bermuda.
     Philip is sailing in the North American leg of a millennium flotilla of tall ships from all over the world. Twelve Canadian tall ships will take par* in the Europe-to-North America voyage, joining 150 other vessels from all over the world.
     “I saw an article in the National Post asking for on-line applications, so I did that. I was lucky enough to be picked. I’m one of only 30 people going from B.C. and 500 from Canada,” Philip says.
     “The crew I’m with will take one of the Canadian boats, the Picton Castle, from Nova Scotia to Bermuda. I’ll be on the boat 10 days. I did a lot of sailing with my family when I was young, but I’ve never been on a boat this long.”
     Or this tall. These tall ships are up to 160 feet long with mast towering above the decks more than 150 feet in height. One of the jobs Philip is looking forward to most is climbing up the mast to pull the sails down. That experience is quite a high for a novice.
     “These were used as cargo boats in the early 1900s. They are steel hulled and square rigged.”

  Philip says. “It is part of the Canadian government’s celebration of the millennium. It gives youth an experience to last a lifetime, and it puts some attention on these incredible ships. For me personally I’ve always dreamed of sailing on the Atlantic and this is a great, unique opportunity. You can also look at it from the perspective of someone from the community having a great experience they can bring back to the community and share.”
     Philip is a volunteer with Big Brothers/Big Sisters’ new “Big Bunch” program. He is also active in UNBC societies. His community service record, combined with friendly outlook and good marks in his UNBC commerce program, is what landed him the spot on the Picton Castle. Organizers were more interested in creating a lasting experience for young people than getting a lot of experienced sailors together. Philip will present a public slide show upon his return.
