A14 THE FREE PRESS HOME & GARDENING SEPTEMBER 7. 2000 With a myriad of tulips, Jos Van Hage says there is one for every taste. Everything is coming up tulips When we think of tulips we think of Holland, but the tulip originated from Turkey and was brought to Holland in the 1600s. The name tulip comes from a Turkish word meaning turban, which accurately describes this beautiful spring flowering bulb. There are over 2000 varieties cultivated by the Dutch growers but only 400 to 500 __ varieties are grown in large numbers. All these varieties of tulips have been divided into 15 different divisions, according to their blooming and growing habits. The earliest divisions of tulips to bloom are the Fosteriana Tulip, and the Kaufmanniana Tulip. Varieties found in the Fosteriana group have large brightly coloured flowers and grow 12 to 14 inches in height. Varieties in the Kaufmanniana division have foliage that are striped or mottled and the flowers are usually bicoloured. When the flower is fully opened, hey look very much like the flowers of the water Jos Van Hage lily. They are an excellent choice for rock gardens because they grow 8 to 10 inches in height. Other early blooming tulips are found in the division Gregii which are beautiful used in borders, rock gardens, and flowerbeds because they grow 10 to -12 inches in height. Not only do they have large showy flowers on sturdy stems but they also have beautifully marked foliage. Another early bloomer is the division of Mini Tulips, also known as Species or Botanical tulips which have short stems (4 to 8 inches in height). For taller varieties (10-12 inches) that are early you would choose from Single Early or Double Early. Single Early tulips are one of the oldest groups of tulips in cultivation and many of the varieties can be used for indoor forcing successfully. The Double Early Tulips are very showy because of their large peony-like flowers. Varieties that are midseason are found in the divisions of Darwin Hybrid used for cut flowers because of their tall stems (20 to 24 inches) and large flowers. <$>» ide's Wedding Cake Rental £>el. / Closing Out Sale September 1 - October 31, 2000 ALL HALL DECORATIONS AND BOUQUETS ¥ Streamers • Pom Poms « Cardboard Shapes « Double Hearts «’ Single Hearts » Doves '%• Horseshoes « Bride & Grooms » Curling Ribbon '» Tulle »’ Napkins » Table Skirts « Table Covers » Balloons * Guest Books if Crystals $ Candles » Ring Pillows « Knife Sets * Wedding Bubbles « Bride & Groom Glasses » Lots of Cake Tops Table Centre Pieces '« Bride's Bouquets « Pew Bows and More! Varieties found in this group are a cross between the Single Early and Single Late tulips and are used successfully for indoor forcing. They grow to a height of 16 to 22 inches in height. The late flowering varieties are in the divisions of Parrot, Green, Single Late, Fringed, Lilyflower-ing and Double Peony. Parrot tulips have petals that are twisted and look like large feathers. They come in various colour combinations and grow 20 to 22 inches in height. Green tulips have green flowers that last for a long time and grow from 20 to 22 inches in height. Single Late tulips are the tallest of the tulips (22 to 28 inches) which makes them an excellent cut flower. They come in many different colours. Fringed tulips are also tall (22 to 28”), and the flowers have fringed orchid-like flowers. They are also known as Crispa tulips. Lilyflowering tulips have a very slim elegant flower with pointed tips and grow 20 to 24 inches in height. The Double Peony Tulips are beautiful, as the flower looks like a large double peony and lasts for a long time. The height varies depending on the variety. The last division of tulips which are not classified as an official group are the Multiflowering Tulips. What makes these tulips different from the other tulips is the fact that each bulb produces three to five blooms per stem. They come in a variety of size, color and blooming time. Happy Gardening! Having problems with your stomach, flatulence, bowel spasms, digestive problems or perhaps a gastric ulcer? There may be herbal help for your complaint. For thousands of years herbs have been used to help these very problems. Marshmallow works by forming a protective gel in the stomach providing a protective barrier against irritating substances that may aggravate ulcers Licorice is another herb traditionally used for peptic ulcers. Recent clinical trials have found that Licorice does indeed help heal ulcers. Licorice may in some cases raise blood pressure so it should be avoided if you do already have high blood pressure. Chamomile is a herb commonly used for it’s anti inflammatory, antibacterial and antispasmodic action. Chamomile is very effective for upper intestinal complaints including irritable bowel syndrome. If you have gas, fennel may be the herb for you. Fennel contains essential oils that help reduce gas in the upper intestinal tract. Researchers have also found that this herb helps increase the flow of bile. Since this action is associated with emulsification of fats this may explain fennel’s reputation as a digestive aid. If you have gallstones or intestinal blockage though you will want to avoid the use of fennel because of this increase in bile production Cardamom has been extensively used in folk medicine and Indian Ayurvedic medicine to aid indigestion and prevent nausea.
