John Anthony Peacey has chosen a jury trial in B.C. Supreme Court. The armed stand-off ordeal, began on October 8, with a call of a suspicious vehicle in the Shelley Road area and a routine road check by police around 6:30 p.m. When the officer was dealing with the driver of a van he had pulled over, the man pulled a handgun and ran back to the van, barricading himself inside. Mr. Peacey was originally charged with kidnapping alone. But now the Crown has added five more charges to the list: forcible confinement, sex assault with a weapon, assault with a weapon, uttering threats and possessing a prohibited weapon. Before going to trial, he will test the Crown’s case against him with a preliminary hearing in Provincial Court. That hearing is slated for three days, beginning February 13. It's fall clean up time. It’s that time of year when we generate lots of yard debris such as dead grass, old leaves, and tree and shrub trimmings. Instead of burning this material and creating air pollution problems, why not compost it. Old grass and leaves are a great carbon source for your home composter. Or, take this material and your tree and shrub trimmings to the Quinn Street Transfer Station or to the Foothills Blvd Regional Landfill where the material will be added to the centralized composting operation. Instead of polluting the air we breath, recycle yard waste back to the earth. Transporting garbage or compostable yard & garden waste to a local waste facility? Remember to cover your load! If material blows out of your vehicle you are in contravention of local bylaws. But more importantly, it makes our community look ugly. For more information on home composting, visit the REAPS compost demonstration garden in Fort George Park or call the REAPS Composting Hotline at 561-7327 For more information on materials accepted for Centralized Composting call the Foothills Landfill at 962-8972 A REDUCING solid waste
