In the series synopsis alone, there are echoes of “Goldfinger,” “Get Smart,” “To Catch a Thief,” “The Green Hornet” and “The Pink Panther.” Each episode ends with a cliffhanger, such as the one where the brothers are dead, leading to another where God and the devil argue over who’s going to get stuck with them. There’s even an element of the old Saturday afternoon serials from the 1930s and ’40s. “I was halfway through episode No. 2 when someone said, ‘OK, this is where we spoof “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,”’ ” Schooley says of the rather dense pop-culture lexicon of the series. “It would have been nice if someone had thought to tell us that the plan was to spoof one or two classic or well-known movies or TV series in every show.” “The Unprofessionals” began life last year with a six-part series called “Skullduggery,” which featured two comic criminal brothers who were so finely attuned to each other that when one was hit, the other screamed. Both shows are the brainchildren of Vancouver writer-director Kellie Benz. After “Skullduggery” became something of a cult hit, the Comedy Network invited her to come up with a full-fledged series for this season. She threw out everything about “Skullduggery” except Schooley, who had played one of the original brothers. “Last season, it was all gags, gizmos and gazmos,” Shyer says. “This year, we want people to tune in because they like the characters and the camaraderie.” “We looked at last season as an incredibly learning opportunity. Basically, Kellie was responsible for almost all of it. Now we’re working with Five directors, five writers and a full-fledged crew. And Kellie’s the ‘show runner,’ ” he adds. That is, by no stretch of the imagination, to be interpreted as meaning that “The Unprofessionals” is just “Skullduggery” gone slick. When Shyer describes the show’s look as retro ... well, think of old “Dr. Who” or early “SCTV” The ragged pacing and grayish, slightly cold videotape look of “The Unprofessionals” hearkens back to unprofessional times. At the same time, the producers have employed computer-generated effects to do such things as having meteors sucked out of the sky by a giant magnet. The overall effect is a bit jarring. If Steven Spielberg and Ed Wood collaborated, this is what it might look like. All this, says Schooley, is intentional. “It’s sort of ... Da-da, da-da, da-da. Oootnph,” he says, lapsing into a generic TV action series musical theme. OQ QQQOOC3QQQ The identity of the featured celebrity is found within the answers in the puzzle.
