Cabbies want councillors to follow licencing model used in Vancouver
   He says his officers have seen a “noticeable reduction of accidents and traffic problems involving cab drivers” and that most cab drivers are taking precautions now they weren’t before.
   “We’re doing this to ensure the safety of all,” he says.
   The policy, he says was well researched with other municipalities in B.C. before it was enacted.
   “Some policies are stricter, some are
not as strict,” he says. “Ours is a middle of the road approach.”
   Mr. Taylor, and a group of nine other cab drivers don’t see how that’s possible.
   They want the city to model their policy on Vancouver’s where cab drivers are bound to 10 demerit points (just over three violations) per year. They feel the policy would be adequate, considering drivers are already bound to existing Motor Vehicle Act and Department of
Transportation regulations.
   “Basically I can go tomorrow with my licence and drive a school bus full of kids but they won’t let me drive a taxi,” says Mr. Taylor.
   They’re asking for a full review of the bylaw, saying it is “simply too extreme and harsh” and was enacted without public input.
   They argue council has the right to revoke it on the grounds it is ineffective
and inoperative, eventually causing so many drivers to appeal their situations to council, council will become bogged down with requests, the turnover rate for new drivers in the city will create uncertainty.
   City council heard appeals from four separate cab drivers affected by the policy last year. Mr. Taylor can count eight drivers over the past three years that have had their permits revoked.
