THE FREE PRESS PHOTO LIFE JUNE 21, 2001 A13 All shined up The annual Father’s Day Show and Shine was another nostalgic hit With the top down it was easy to see the interior of Jack and Marg Kinsey’s ‘34 Dodge DR convertible. Pamela Liebault’s 1928 ford Model A was one of the oldest cars at the show. The sidewalk near Eldon Brown’s 1929 Cleveland motorcycle was a shady place to rest. Doug Brown A weed is simply a plant that is growing somewhere where it is not wanted. Whether it is in your flower/vegetable garden, or in the lawn this undesired plant if left unattended will gradually take over the area and in the worst case scenario choke out the surrounding vegetation. The best time to get rid of a weed is when it is in its early stage and before it goes into seed. In your flower/vegetable garden, it is a good time to cultivate the soil now by either hoeing or rototilling around the desired plants. For best results do this on a sunny day when the soil is dry ensuring that the weeds dry out quickly. By doing this every 2 weeks, you should be able to keep most weeds under control and in the same time, you are aerating the soil. If however, Blooming Good News there are some weeds that are hard to kill you may have to go to a chemical alternative. To rid the lawn of unwanted weeds is a little more time consuming. If you have a few dandelions that you want to get rid of manually; you can pull them out making sure that the entire root is extracted. (There is a tool on the market called the 'American Weeder', which has been designed to take the complete dandelion root and top out in one pull). If however you have a lot of broadleafed weeds such as dandelion, clover, plantain, etc, you can use a herbicide that contains 2,4-D, Mecoprop, and Dicamba which kills most broadleafed weeds. For the best results when using a herbicide use the following guideline. always read the label of any chemical before using it. Use the recommended concentration. • weeds should be actively growing when applying a herbicide to ensure that they absorb the chemical. • the soil should be moist before application. Water the soil a couple of days before applying the herbicide. • do not apply a herbicide when the temperatures exceed 25C. as plants will burn. • wait 3 days before mowing the lawn after the herbicide has been applied. • avoid spraying any herbicide on a windy day to prevent drift. If using a granular keep the spreader as close to the lawns surface as possible. • If using a granular, the weed leaves should be slightly damp to help promote the herbicide sticking to it. • do not use on a new sod or on newly planted grass. Sod should be well rooted and planted grass should be mowed at least 3 times. • unless stated on the product, do not apply the herbicide unless there is 24 hours of dry weather anticipated. • keep all pets and people off the area for a period of time (should be stated on the container) The best prevention to weed control in the lawn is a healthy well-maintained lawn. A lawn that is properly fertilized, watered and mowed makes it hard for weeds to become established. Happy Gardening! Jos.
