THE FREE PRESS PEOPLE JULY 5. 2001 A15 fiolaclick com Finally, a real Canadian Internet Business Directory with lots of neat features and links Focus on safety New business keeps eye on kids during summer When the cat’s away, the mice will play As soon as school is out for summer, kids are turned loose all over the city Parents have to trust that their young ones are not falling into the wrong activities or getting caught in vulnerable situations. But kids will be kids. Laura Ferguson is the last line of defense for a lot of parents. She is on patrol under the banner of Safety-watch, the company she started with, of course, her 12-year-old son Tyler. They are available to check in with kids who are at that in-between stage - old enough to be home alone, but still in need of some adult supervision. While they’re at it, they will also be dropping around local parks and public areas to be a peacekeeping presence there, too. “Both of us were looking for something to do over summer,” says Laura, with Tyler nodding. “He’s very entrepreneurial, he’s 12 and we wanted something to do together.” Their first day on the job was last Friday They have already put their services to use by improving the safety in some nearby parks. “We’ve been picking up glass, syringes, condoms and soon. We watch the playgrounds and try to keep some of the kids from getting into things they shouldn’t.” They’ve already caught one young pitcher in the act, throwing rocks at cars. There is nothing they can do to intervene in an act of crime or misbehaviour other than to speak up to the culprits and inform the authorities. They make their rounds armed with a cell phone and a camera. Laura says “often an adult saying something is usually enough to curb the activity, if it’s just mischief. If it’s dangerous or criminal activity we will be calling the police.” Much of the rounds are done as concerned volunteers, but Safetywatch is also for hire. Parents can have them check in with at-home kids, look in on vacant homes / property, pick up mail and newspapers, visit shut-ins, be a contact for babysitters, etc. This is done in a highly consultative fashion with parents / guardians. Emergency information and individual protocols are noted well in advance. “If it is a private client we have full information from the parent on what they prefer, and we act according to that,” Laura says. Monthly rates are available as well as individual drop-in rates. Safetywatch (964-2455) hopes to be a highly visible addition to the summer and keep neighbourhoods that much more secure during a season of busy activity Just because the kids are on the prowl doesn’t mean it has to be a jungle out there.
