A4 THE FREE PRESS NEWS AUGUST 23, 2001 Duelling surveys ratchet up debate over pub location You got your pub support, I got mine. That’s the message from city developer Eldon Matte, of Matte Brothers Construction Ltd., who have just finished their own survey of residents along Highway 16 West asking them where they would prefer to see a new pub — on the north side of the highway at the Mr. G. location or on Highway 16 south, alongside the Bon Voyage Motor Inn. The two proposed pub loca- Matte tions have to be approved by the city, through a rezoning process and the province's Liquor Control and Licensing Board. Mr. Matte has also applied to the board for an exemption to its competing application policy, which tries to consider the public’s interest in approving liquor licences. He argues that the city should really give both pubs the go-ahead, but if only one applica tion is approved, it should be the Bon Voyage Plaza location. Of the 329 people who responded to a 1,747 residence mail-out survey in the area, nearly 67 per cent of them voted in favour of the Bon Voyage location. About 25 per cent of those polled voted for the Gauthier Road location and another eight per cent of results were returned invalid. Harry Backlin, acting for the Gauthier Road location, submitted survey results to council in June saying 92 per cent of residents polled were in favour of a pub in the area. Mr. Matte says the results prove his own location has public support. But Jason Llewellyn from the city’s planning department says the proposal would still have to go before council in a public hearing. While the survey will be taken into account, the city is waiting for servicing, highway access issues, including the installation of a traffic light, and a preliminary decision from the province before it goes ahead with first and second reading. Mr. Matte says the best he can do is present his findings. "They’d be foolish not to at least listen to it or to take note of the public support,” he says. Assault John L. An easy way to collect seeds is to tie a paper bag under the seedpods and the seeds will fall into the bag when they are ripe. You can also cut the stem near ground level and put it head down in the paper bag and leave the bag in a warm room for a few days. For beans, peas, and corn, leave a few of the chosen pods or ears on the plant until they are dry. Cut them off the plant before they break open and place them in a paper bag where they can further dry. For tomatoes, cucumbers or other fruits and vegetables with seeds in their flesh (wet seeds) choose a fruit and place it somewhere where it can ripen undisturbed. When it has fully ripened which is when it starts to go bad squeeze, out the seeds and place them in a jar. Add water to the jar and let it sit for a day at room temperature and then rinse the seeds in running water by pounding it through a sieve making sure that there is no flesh adhering to the seed. Spread the wet clean seeds on a screen for a few days to let them dry. To prepare all seeds for storage make sure that they are clean and dry. Dry the seeds in a location with lots of air circulation where the temperature does not exceed 36C. If they are not dry enough, it could cause pre-seed germination or mold or rot will destroy the seed. When the seeds are completely dry, place them in a well-sealed glass or tin containers. To help keep the moisture out, put two spoonfuls of silica gel wrapped in issue into the container along with the seeds. (The little packages of silica that comes with new shoes work wells). This works well for all seeds with the exception of beans and peas which need to breathe so these can be stored in a paper bag or a jar with holes punched in the lid. Store all seeds in a cool dark place such as a fridge where the temperature is between 5-10 degrees C. An important note to remember when collecting seeds is that the flower/vegetable may not always be exactly as the mother plant. This is always true when collecting seeds from any hybrid. A hybrid is the result of pollinating two distinctly different members of the same species with the resulting plant having the best characteristics of both parents. The general generations of hybrids may not breed "true" so to retain the hybrid qualities you need to return to the parental lines. Happy Gardening! fos. By now, most of us are enjoying fresh produce out of the gardens and the flowers are in full bloom. If you are like many gardeners, you are already planning for next year’s garden and the changes you will make. I like to write down a few notes on what worked and did not work and I take pictures of the flowerbeds and baskets so that I know what to do for next year. This is also a good time to collect seeds from your favourite plants for next years garden.
