So it was a complex relationship, or friendship. And, in the end, the thing they had in common was boxing ... Morley was a very good boxer, albeit a lightweight to Hemingway's middleweight. “Boxing was everything to Hemingway. We've got a line in our movie that says, ‘My writing's nothing; my boxing’s everything.’ So they had that in common. But in the end, there was a misunderstanding over a boxing match, and that was the end of the friendship. They never spoke again.” For the part of the story that’s set in 1961, Gordon Pinsent plays the elder Callaghan, by now a world-famous author in his own right. Reporters from the three Toronto papers are camping on his doorstep hoping for a quote. But he ducks them by going for a long walk around Toronto, alone with his memories, his grieving and his regrets. When Callaghan and Hemingway met, the American was already a legend on a small scale. As a foreign correspondent for the “Star,” he had distinguished himself as a talented writer and thorough researcher, and had become a friend of Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound, Stein and the others. He returned to the “Star” newsroom with an inflated sense of his importance, something that infuriated pm m SALES & RENTALS Rental Items: • Dishes • Cutlery • Glasses • Tables & Chairs • Coffee Urns • Popcorn Machine • Barbeques • Tents • Hot Dog Machine • Cotton Candy Machine • Large Selection of Wedding Supplies 1867-1 st Avenue (250) 563*5014 editor-in-chief Harry Hindmarsh (played by perennial arch-villain Michael Ironside). "Harry Hindmarsh didn’t want a star, he wanted a 'Star Man,’ ” Jennings says. "And. if Hemingway wasn’t going to give him what he wanted, he would break him. “I think that is one of the biggest successes of the miniseries • that we’ve captured what it must have been like for a man like Hemingway to come back to the ‘Star’ and be sent to Sudbury to cover a minor story." Preview tapes of the miniseries were unavailable for screening, but one of the highlights of the script is the final confrontation between Hemingway and Hindmarsh over the Sudbury assignment, which ends with the writer storming out of the newsroom. The miniseries was shot entirely in Toronto. Little remains in the city from 1961. let alone from the ’20s. The producers used a few heritage buildings to stand in for landmarks such as the old “Star" buildings (the paper has moved twice since Hemingway worked there) and rebuilt the surrounding buildings, working from archival photos, with computer-generated graphics. The large cast includes Carly Pope and Patricia Gage as Callaghan's wife, Loretto, in youth and old age; Michelle Holden as Hemingway’s Torontonian first wife, Hadley; Kristen Holden-Reid as Fitzgerald and Reagan Pasternak as Zelda; James Allodi as the minor writer Robert McAlmon; Aida Turturro as Stein; and Patrick McKenna and William B. Davis as early-'60s “Star" men.
