Ogilvie Block, 70, 2 rings. It is recognized in British Columbia that if public hospitals are to be maintained at the/necessary hiyh standard of efficiency, a different system of financing must be evolved. Hospitals, ^except in rare instances, are rot Self-supporting, and as a result those charged with the management are in a constant state of worry over the financial problems confronted. Temporary relief by municipalities and organizations can never be expected to carry the institutions to a permanent success, and some means must be put forward at any early date to put the hospitals of the province on a proper financial basis. In an excellent address before the B. C. Hospital convention at Kam-loops recently, Dr. Young, provincial health officer, offered a solution of the problem in advocating a universal health tax. Dr. Young stated the solution lies with the people of the province. The provincial government ¦.jics'.'i'.ts the people, and if the peo-i pie demand an adequate health tax o in oust will naturally be forthcoming. It is worthy of note that Dr. Young l-'ocs further than a hospital tax, believing that prevention is better than curexand that a very large percentage of\the cases in the hospitals should not be there. He strongly advocates for hospital relief the establishment of health centres, to act as clearing stations for the hospitals and providing treatment for. many'cases that need not go to the hospitals. j^I^revention is the keynote of the j systeni^ad.vocated, and it is reasonable to believe that prevention, besides being better than cure, will he found cheaper. The question pressing. Next autumn the provincial Legislature meets, and hefov then a constructive policy, backed by public approval, should be submitted to the government. "Ain't Nature wonderful?" ALBERTA'S ELECTION The farmers of Alberta scored a sweeping victory in the recent provincial elections. The new administration, the second of its kind to be elected in Canada during the past year, has a clear mandate from the people. It is intei-esting. to note, however, that in the more populous centres, such as Calgary and Edmonton,, the Farmer movement had no appeal. Edmonton elected five Liberals, while Calgary went strong for the independent candidates! The people of Alberta had not 1 lost confidence in the Stewart gov- Jlere's an old one that's worth reprinting: A man's life is full of crosses and temptations. He comes into- this world without his consent, and goes out against his will, and the ' trip between the two 'is exceedingly rocky. The rule of contraries is one of the most important features of the trip. When he is little the biy girls kiss him, and when he is big the little girls kiss him. If he is poor he s a bad manager; if he is rich he is dishonest. If he needs credit he can't get it; if lie is prosperous everyone wants to do him favor. If he's in politics it's for pio;if he is out of politics you can't place him and he's no good fur his country. If he doesn't give to charity he's a stingy cuss; if he does it's for show. If he is actively religious he's a hypocrite; if he takes no interest in religion, he is a hardened sinner. If he shows affection he is a soft specimen; if he seems to care for no one he is cold-blooded. If he dies young there was a great future before him; if he lives to an old age he has missed his calling. The road is rocky, but man-loves to travel it. THE FOOLISH MAN. Thero was a man in oui1 town And he would never learn; He went upon a fishing trip Ami let his camp-fire bum. Oh, swiftly spread that forest fin And many homes it burned, And from that little fishing trip That-man has ne'er returned.
