Prince George Star 4 Nechako Bridge Opened to Public on Wednesday After education extending over several years on the part of businessmen and city organizations in an endeavor to have the government build a bridge over the Nechako, to enable those living on the north side of the river to have a means of reaching the city at all times of the year, instead of being left for some months each year without any means of crossing, the structure has at last been completed and is a credit to those in charge of the work. While there was no formal ceremonial in connection with the opening of the thorough fare to general traffic those desiring to come to the city were unable to do so in safety, the driveway being completed so far that it was thought safe to allow any who wish to cross. A number avail themselves of the opportunity and use this means of reaching the business center of the city with various commodities they have for sale. Men are still working on the draw and in building railings on each side, but the driveway is completed it in a few days more all work will be finished. The building of this bridge should add much to the business coming this way from the north side of the river, as it has been claimed lack of facilities for getting across the river was retarding the settlement of lands which were preempted settlers not being able to dispose of the stuff grown. Work was commenced early in the spring and has been carried on all summer by a large force of men under the direction of Mr. Haney, the government foreman in charge of the erecting force. While there was considerable delay in securing material, the force of workmen were kept steadily busy, and now have the satisfaction of seeing the structure opened to traffic. The road leading from the bridge to the center of the city is in good condition, having been graded by those in charge of municipal improvements. As completed the drive will be nearly 1000 feet long, and comprises three stands and a swing in the center to enable boats to navigate the waterway. During the construction of the PGE work this will be found useful, as there is no doubt some of the larger boats will be used. The approach on the North Side has been carefully grated and gives a splendid road for traffic to the section of the country. The swing part is about 120 feet long and will be operated as the ordinary swing bridge. While, perhaps, we have not progressed as fast as some thought necessary, the opening of a highway across the freezer and Nechako rivers marks an era of development in the district that will make communication with the city easy during this season of the year, when the river is impassable, and should greatly assist in the settlement of land in all directions, decides adding to improve business conditions and helping to boost the city along to its logical position as the center trading point of a rapidly opening country.
