10 QUUN Nov. 13-26, 1970 By the Gillette House To many young people of North America, communes are a growing reality. For those who are bothered by the walls of their environment and long foi the open spaces of an expanded consciousness, communes offer another alternative. They are started by all kinds of people, for they consist of people who want to be together, political indealists, pacifists, return to the land homesteaders, ex-drug addicts all coming together with a desire to be with others. The -things that make up a commune are not great or spectacular, it's the little things awareness and caring, the warmth and intimacy of a family, to become extended families, the need to give and not just take, complete sharing and involvment in one form or another in their own lives. Parents drive their costumed fledglings to apartment buildings for what reason? So the little ones don't have to spend so much time to gather, their quota of candy? Maybe security probably both. Whatever the reason, the result is a loss of meaning. The children no longer even go through the ritual of saying "Trick or Treat" the only thing that raises any kind of emotion is if you dare to give them homemade candy instead of five cent candy bars. Twice I had my address entered into a note book so they could remember to come back when I told them I had run out but had sent someone to buy more. The only way we're ever going to get anything done is when many many more people realize that the only way is by consistant and sustained effort. At the moment the only ones who seem to show any form of consistancy is the present established government. I wonder if it would be best if we left every thing up to them. Yours is the choice . . . . I found it very disturbing to be one of the forty or so students out of a possible 400 that attended the student council general meeting to vote on the approval of the proposed student union budget for the 7071 college year. Apathy ??? What an amazing amount of cars, as parents drive their little monsters around door to door to collect their halloween goodies I The hardest hit was Prince George Manor. Its halls surging withwierdo's of all shapes and sizes, brought by concerned parents from all parts of town, towalkwithinthe stark security of its institutional walls. Its aspiring portals now littered with the cast-offs of a marauding jelly tot army. ", The Band hits another high note By Bill Donnelley (Silhouette) ERIC CLAPTON AND THE YARDBIRDS LIVE WITH SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON MERCURY RECORDS. Before you purchase this LP, one thing should be brought to your attention. The album is a rip-off in that the cover makes it look like a new Eric Clapton record, which it most certainly is not. It is entirely Sonny Boy Williamson's record and the Yardbirds, including Clapton, serve only as very competent backup musicians to the late Sonny Boy. Recorded in 1963 at the Crawdaddy Club in Richmond, England, the album is a good showcase for Williamson's many talents. His harp playing has influenced just about everybody who's ever played one since he's been around and his singing and writing talents are abundant. He composed every cut on the LP ('Bye Bye Bird' which was co-written with Willie Dixon). "Mister Downchild" and "Pontiac Blues" are great examples of undiluted and unfreaked sincere blues, while "Baby Don't Worry" and "I Don't Care No More" are both very exciting solos by Sonny Boy. If you're a blues fan, the album is worth it but forget it if you're looking for Clapton. He's hiding. STAGE FRIGHT-THE BAND -CAPITAL RECORDS. They just keep getting better. The Band have once again proven that they can create truly exciting music, work on it for months and mike it sound like they made it up on the spot. The album starts with "Strawberry Wine," which is perhaps the wildest number they've ever recorded. Richard Maunel's piano carries the rest of the group through this great rocker. "Sleeping" the most sensitive and melancholy song the Band has ever recorded follows it. "Timf To Kill," their new single, and "Just Another Whistle Stop" although not the most outstanding things on the record, are as good as anything they've ever done and that's saying something. "A La Glory" closes side one and displays that evasive mood that only the Band can create. The term 'coffee house' is used to describe Weatherbird, but it doesn't quite fit the bill. It's more than a coffee house. It is and can be, anything youwant to make it for Weatherbird caters to many tastes and interests. It is a live audience training ground for up and coming local musicians, a place to rap with friends and strangers, a place to meet and feel a part of the scene, and hopes are high that it will be a place to learn and engage in hobbies such as photography, piano and guitar as well as sports such as ping-pong, darts, and much more. Located in the basement of Knox United Church at 5th Ave. and Brunswick St., Weatherbird organizers spent many days painting and decorating their area, installing suitable lighting and, with the help of funds from the Receiving Horn,-' Society (to the tune of $1,000), a superb sound system. As usual in show biz, opening night was hectic and to all appearances completely disorganized before the show started. Like all quality performances though, the show went right on schedule to a packed house. When it was over early Monday morning, the group was satisfied that it had been a great success, thanks to the efforts of entertainers such as Gordie Mantle, Dave Gallant, Ian Johnson, Heather Ross, Bernie Gannon, and Dave's wife Dtbbie. Everyone connected with Weatherbird is looking eagerly forward to the future. WB For All Your PHOTOGRAPHIC SUPPLIES CHRISTMAS PORTRAITURE W.D. WEST STUDIOS LTD. I 1352 3rd Avenue, Prince George, B.C.
