4 - KALEIDOSCOPE - April, 1979 April is the time of year for post-secondary students to look for that sometimes elusive summer job. But it is also the time to struggle with the "simplified" Income Tax Return and to fret about the moment of truth final exams. With all of these things demanding C.N.C. students' time, the door-to-door job application can be a source of mental overload. The Provincial Youth Employment Program's Youth Referral Service provides a fast and simple way to apply for numerous jobs simultaneously. Under the Provincial Youth Employment Program employers in provincial government ministries, businesses, farms, non-profit organizations, municipalities, hospital and school boards, and post-secondary institutions may apply for funds to hire students and unemployed youth to fill full-time jobs during the summer months. Last year over 13,000 youths across the province found jobs under the program. Many of the employers used the program's computerized Youth Referral Service to find qualified applicants to fill these positions. The service operates from the Victoria office and placed 475 jobs in the Prince George Region. This year, with the addition of a computer terminal to the Prince George office, we expect the jobs placed to at least double in number. The province's Youth Referral Service gives students the opportunity to work at summer jobs which match their skills, education courses, and interests. Jobs range from parks maintenance to technical research to working with the handicapped. To apply for hese jobs, students fill out only one computerized Youth Job Application detailing their education, work experience, skills and job interests. The applications are loaded onto a central memory bank in Vancouver. When employers in Prince George who have been funded under the program request referrals to a job, they may use one or more of the above categories. The information is entered into the Prince George terminal and the computer is instructed to print the names of qualified applicants from the Prince George area. Thus, the best-suited applicants are referred to the employers. Students interested in applying for jobs available under the Youth Employment Program may drop by "??
