Requiem Sisterhood. Not only is "it" powerful, it is also a difficult concept to define. . Since approximately fifty percent of the population of this College is female, since" any woman Interested in feminism will eventually have to deal with this term, and any feminist group should be highly concerned with this subject, an exploration of the word and its beginnings is in order. The phrase, "Sisterhood is powerful", was coined by Kathie Sarachild in 1968 in a leaflet she wrote for New York Radical Women. It was a simple political statement women acting together are more powerful than women acting alone. But, informally, the phrase picked up connotations of "togetherness" and unswerving, uncritical loyalty to all women...thus, Sisterhood was born. Sisterhood; an image of how it should really be. Yet throughout the feminist movement an excuse, or a reason, to stifle political disagreement and differing opinions, and an excuse to oppress. "Had said at the time, 'We don't like what certain women are saying,' then we could have talked about disagreements. But, instead, people would say, 'You have no right to say that to her - she's a woman.' It got to the point where they would give out tokens at the beginning of each meeting. Each time you spoke, you put in a token, and if you used up all your tokens, you couldn't speak anymore. So the people who had more experience, the leaders, could not speak because they were on the same level as the woman who came off the street yesterday and maybe wanted to sit back and listen. Sisterhood was originally a strong word - women uniting. It wasn't this wimpy-wampy stuff." (Colette Price, a nurse who now belongs to Red-stockings, telling how, Sisterhood was invoked to stifle political disagreements in New York Radical Women around 1969, in an article written by Veronica Geng.) The alienation of the feminist movement from the original reason for feminism - male oppression of females in our culture - has made it easy to accuse another woman of "unsisterly" actions. We, as women and feminists, should be dealing with the realities of trying to exist in a male dominated culture, and helping each other to trust and accept the evidence of our senses, in many cases helping each other to become in touch again with our senses, to control our own lives and thoughts - not wasting time squabbling over Sisterhood. Per chance have we forgotten how profound an affect the male opinion has on our personal and political lives? Are we so busy apologizing for men because they, too, are oppressed by capitalism, racism or a "masculine mystique" that teaches them not to cry- or building toy alternatives to the "male death culture" that we have forgotten why we originally decided to organize? In part, due to negative feedback from men, and in part due to some feminist promotion of "lunatic fringes", feminists and feminist organizations have become overly concerned with "image". "The PREGNANT AND DISTRESSED? 8prtf)rigf)t PH: 564-0492 tfer - Fri. I0m - 2pm - PREGNANCY TESTS - EMERGENCY HELP - COUNSELLING ALL SERVICES FREE AND CONFIDENTIAL movement would die out, if the bra-burning image and hate rhetoric alienated the broad groups of women who I sensed were ready to come in." This statement by Betty Friedan, this strategy, was and is insulting to women -insinuating they are not free thinking individuals, but slow witted "broad groups", who must be carefully shielded from the facts, like children, until they are ready to "come in". "Now a lot of women have felt they had to tone themselves down in order to 'reach most women'. ..All I can say is that in my experience, you don't reach most women by toning yourself down, by lying about your needs and desires. That's the kind of deceit you use against people you really consider your enemies or your inferiors.. .Lies are boring, lies are what women have heard a million times before." Kathie Sarachild, 1971. We must overcome political compromise and fear of male retribution (both personal and Social) in order to act in a strong effective manner. Then perhaps we can come closer to that ideal of Sisterhood. "You expect this movement to be your grail, you expect women to treat you better than men, and it does not work. Feminism was the one place where I really went down the line. I said, I believe this, women are the exception, women will not hurt each other. And to find that women were just as capable of power-tripping and playing the kind of hierarchecal games which are so ingrained in this society, and which I thought feminism existed to change through its collective structure, was probably one of the greatest disappointments of my IVCF IVCF is a fellowship group for on campus Christians or those interested. It's purpose is to provide a regular time of meeting and discussion over mutual concerns. The word Varsity is another name for University and thus it is an inter-University or inter-College group. Participants are kept abreast of what is happening on other campuses through discussion and their IVCF leader, Bob Goethe. Bob works fulltime as an IVCF staffperson in the wider Prince George area. He fills the group in on activities and functions that are available for joining, whether they are seminars or strictly fun events. From time to time a film or guest speaker is featured. Daughters of Lillith lectured at noon hour in room 306 lecture hall, the topic was, "Should a Christian be Capitalist or Socialist?" The lecture was enjoyed by all who attended with stimulating conversation. Inter-Varsity meets twice a week here at CNC, on Tuesdays from 3:30 - 5:30 and on Wednesdays from 12:00 - 1:00 in Room 308-B. All those curious or interested are welcome to come along. It's okay to bring your lunch on Wednesdays as many in the group do. On Tuesdays the group usually eats supper together in the cafeteria. Perhaps you have noticed the Christian bookstand just outside the cafeteria on Thursdays from 11:30-1:30. IVCF sponsors the bookstand which has a wide range of literature on contemporary topics relevant to students. Feel free to stop and talk to any one of the people working at the bookstand even if you're not in the mood for buying.
