t LETTERS continued ! The time for the annual student revolt r against the Student Union executive has , come again and this time it has left the five member executive bereft of both vice- i presidents. I It seems that every year about this time the directorship of the Student Union asks for the resignations of one or more of the executive. Last year both the President and the Secretary quit, the President, Larry Underhill, was forced out and the Secretary, Elaine barker, quit out of sympathy for Mr. Underhill, or so the story goes. Part of the reason for unrest among the Student Union directorship stems from the fact that the Student Union, although registered as a society under the Societies Act, is not in good standing with the registrar of Companies due to a failure to file the requisite documents every year when required to do so. This combined with a succession of people elected to the executive who have little or no fiscal training or understanding has resulted in a situation whereby the books cannot be audited for the simple reason that there is no way to tell what has happened in past years from the financial records. I am not deriding the present executive (what's left of it) but I dc have some suggestions that they might possibly lend some thought to. One thing I am happy about I feel that I should make it clear why I resigned from my Student Union position of 1st Vice President. For the most part I resigned because it was becoming increasingly difficult for me to properly balance my class and study time against how much time the Student Union was demanding. Something had to give and I refused to put my classes and marks in any more jeopardy. I am attending this college for an education and that will come first over anything else. I also resigned for personal reasons. Some of the decisions made by the council put my friends and I on opposite sides of the fence so to speak, and I don't feel that any organization has the right to come between friendships. As well there are funny little deals and backstabbings going on all of the time which I finally got too disgusted with, and didn't feel I should have to put up with any more. Finally, the "parasite" attitude of some people was the straw that broke the camel's back. To emphasize this last point I would like to refer to the "Info CNC" paper of feb-ruary 10. It reads "We've been abandoned!...the 1st and 2nd Vice Presidents...threw off their committment to the students of CNC and resigned...'" All I can say is that I feel sorry for you people who think of me as a traitor for deciding to think of my own grade committments first. I know that 99 of the people in the L college would fully agree with me for resigning for the reasons I have mentioned, and as for the remaining 1, you can go to Hell for all I care. I Sincerely i Dan Vatamaniuck P.S. I have asked to have this article "Duty" reprinted because it says a lot about the way ii feel right now. is that there is now a Student Activities Coordinator who has come into what could be a very difficult situation and has already straightened out some of the mess. What I would really like to see is the Student Union appoint (elect) a business manager to work alongside the Treasurer and co-ordinate all profit motivated student activities. At the moment the student activities co-ordinator is doing one thing, President Stewart St. Dennis is doing something else, and Noel Warkman is handling the B.C. Winter Games Souvenir sales. Most other post-secondary institutions have a person to fulfil the position of business manager and frequently that person is a full-time employee of the student association. In defence of the present executive it has been said by many students that the Student Union has been far more effective this year than in the past. I say that it is a good thing to since CNC is bursting at the seams and will continue to be for the immediately forseeable future. However the Student Union must be prepared to get tough with both students and the administration if it is to continue to function with any coherance whatsoever. There appears to be an attitude of mistrust on the part of many students towards their fellow students and towards the administration. This results in situations where backstabbing and suspicion runs rampant resulting in hatreds developing and a dichotomy between Student Union executive members, between the Student Union and the students, and between the student body DUTY Do not confuse "duty" with what other people expect of you; they are utterly different. Duty is a debt you owe to yourself to fulfill obligations you have assumed voluntarily. Paying that debt can entail anything from years of patient work to instant willingness to die. Difficult it may be, but the reward is self-respect. But there is no reward at all for doing what other people expect of you, and to do so is not merely difficult, but impossible. It is easier to deal with a-footpad than it is with the leech who wants "just a few minutes of your time, please - this won't take long." Time is your total capital, and the minutes of your life are painfully few. If you allow yourself to fall into the vice of agreeing to such requests, they quickly snowball to the point where these parasites will use up 100 percent of your time -- and squawk for more! So learn to say No - and be rude about it when necessary. Otherwise you will not have time to carry out your duty, or to do your own work, and certainly no time for love and happiness. The termites will nibble away you life and leave none of it for you. (This rule does not mean that you must not do a favor for a friend, or even a stranger. But let the choice be yours. Don't do it because it is "expected" of you.) From: Time enough for love p 353 By Robert A. Heinlein Dear Editor: The Vending machines in CNC are turning pirate! Did you know they charge 35c for a box of Cracker Jacks that says 30c right on the box! Isn't that illegal? At the very least it's shitty. 3 and the administration. In many cases the Student Union looks at any action by the administration as a possible threat to the students when frequently the administration is doing its best to do the students a favour and to help them. A case in point occured when CNC Principal Charles McCaffery suggested to the Student Union that there might be a possibility of getting funding for a student union building; many of those who heard the proposal immediately asked what the catch was (looking a gift horse in the mouth). As far as I was ever able to tell the catch was that Mr. McCaffery found he had a very large sum of money that he had to do something with before the provincial government got their fingers on it and that he saw an opportunity to help the students and get a feather for his own cap at the same time by having CNC become the first community college in B.C. to have a student union building. As you can see there will be an election held in the very near future to fill the positin of 1st and 2nd vice-president on the Student Union executive, there may also be an election held in March to elect one or two members for next years executive to provide for some continuity for the many programs and activities with which the Student Union is involved. Here's hoping that future Student Union executives will be forward thinking and will provide an environment of peace and prosperity for the Student Union and will operate as a smoothly operating machine that has the student's best interests at heart. What are we doing with these stupid machines anyways besides contributing to the Dental Association, the Medical Association, and vending machine businesses?! Wait -1 guess we're being good consumers and contributing to the corporate dollar. Oh; don't forget, we're helping to balance the cafeteria budget by putting up with this shit. Love Suzi Creamcheese Thyra's Yoga Few words suggest the mystic wisdom of the east more strongly than Yoga. The aim of my newly started Yoga classes for the CNC Student Association is to present quite simply some basic principles of living and to show you how they can be put to practice through specific exercises. Hatha Yoga or control of the body, teaches the naturalness of a long and healthy life and provides a healing system towards all disorders, even infectious diseases which are sometimes the results of mental causes. I had the pleasure of being instructed by Selvarayan Yesudian who has a Yoga studio log in Switzerland with Elizabeth Hutch. It was a fantastic experience. Do come and share it with me between 11:15 and 12:15 every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. See You Thyra y
