RECORD REVIEWS The Cars Panorama Just in case you are not familiar with The Cars, they are a 5-man band from the eastern U.S. who are gaining popularity quite rapidly. Panorama is their third album, and it looks to be another million-seller alongside Candy-0 and The Cars. As of this writing, Panorama is the 2 album in Canada. The cars are a unique band, as they are one of the few AM-FM crossover bands in existance today. Much of their success revolves around the sheer simplicity of their lyrics and music. All ten of the songs on Panorama are approximately three minutes long, tailor-made for AM radio. Side one begins with the title song, which is argueably the best cut on the album. If you listen closely, some of the guitar riffs are strikingly similar to those used by The Beatles on their earlier albums. Next is "Touch and Go", the initial single release. To hear it, though, one must turn the radio dial to CFUN or CKLG, as our local stations don't ever seem to play anything new. The rest of side one is good, with "Don't Tell Me No" standing our from "Gimme Some Slack" and "Getting Through". Side two leads off with "Misfit Kids", which is obviously labeled for a younger audience: "Un-American misfit kids, I'm still wondering what I did, yeah..." "Down Boys", the next song, also fits in this category: "You can make it with the down boys, They don't hear a word you say, You can make it with the down boys, Just stay outta their way ..." There's some nice mellowness in "You Wear Those Eyes", followed by ugly bitterness in "Running To You", before the album closes with "Up and Down", a real rocker in the mould of "Candy-O". In conclusion, the band hasn't quite reached the excellence of their first album. (Remember Boston?) If fact, of their three albums, this one is third-best. Still, Panorama is better than most of the newer SOAPBOX Soapbox is a column which will be appearing regularly in the CNC Free Press. Its purpose is to discuss the lesser-known pros and cons (professionals and convicts) of our school and the time they spend here. I have been reminded to tell you people about the services offerd by CNC's guidance counsellors. I can personally vouch for them as I have used their services myself. I told the counsellor (I shall call him Waldo) that I was haivng money problems. He said it was too bad that all of us aren't rich and loaded, as these people tend to have fewer monetary problems. I was somewhat skeptical, so I asked him to show me what he meant. So, after school, we went to a house party, where a friendly poker game was in progress. Myself being an accomplished player, I soon joined the game, as did Waldo. Some good fortune (along with some sleight-of-hand) enabled me to go up $500.00, at which point Waldo suggested we leave (he was $75.00 down). I was already beginning to forget about my money problems. We decided to celebrate my good fortune by having a few drinks at the Canada Hotel. I was somewhat hungry, so Waldo volunteered to buy some food. While he was gone, a man came over to our table and asked me if I'd like releases of so-called 'New Wave' bands, Give Ric Ocasek and Co. credit for trying to be different. Rating: 8(out of ten) ACDC -Back In Black For those of you who may be wondering about the album title, it is in reference to Bon Scott, the band's former lead singer who unfortunately died at the young age of 33. On April Wine's lates tour, they made a special point of dedicating their song 'Rock and Roll is a Vicious Game' to him. At this writing, Back In Black is Canada's 7 album. The new lead singer is Brian Johson, who by mere coincidence is Australian (so are all the other band members). His voice is unquestionably raspy and bears a distinct resemblance to Bon Scott's, which fits in well with the heavy-metal sound of ACDC. 'Hell's Bells' is an excellent opening song, good party music. It also makes reference to Bon Scott: "White lightnin's flashing across the sky, You're only young but you're gonna die" The rest of side one is raunchy (but good), especially 'What do you do for Money, Honey?' and 'Given the Dog a Bone'. (You only had to look at the label). Side two begins with the title track, and then proceeds into the album's first single release, 'You Shook Me All Night Long'. Hopefully it will hit the airwaves shortly. Then there is the drunkard's delight, 'Have a Drink on Me'. We finish by listening to the reaction of teens to their parent's attitude towards rock music, 'Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution'. "Rock and roll ain't noise pollution, Rock and roll ain't gonna die, Rock and roll ain't noise pollution, Rock and roll it will surivie" In conclusion, definitely a gutsy album'-probably the band's best yet, which is saying a lot. This album will put them back in black -financially, that is. to buy some mushrooms. I thought they'd go well with the hamburgers Waldo was getting, so I said fine. After we'd eaten, I was feeling so "loaded" that I'd completely forgotten about my money situation and paid the man $250.00 for his "magic mushrooms". In fact, I didn't even remember that I had money problems for another three days. So Waldo really did know what he was talking about. But don't just take my work for it. Just ask the people besides myself who have benefitted from consulting their guidance counsellors. At one time, Calvin Kooch was uncertain of this future after leaving CNC. Our counsellors felt that he would benefit from taking the job aptitude test offered at the Canada Manpower Center. This test showed the Calvin had a weak vocabulary, poor reading and writing skills, and more importantly, an aptitude towards being an apprentice mortician. However, after an extensive search, our counsellors helped Calvin obtain a job which suited he personality and skills. He is now the editor of Deathbed magazine, which I'm sure all of you have read at one time or another. When she first came to CNC, Claudia Kleinschmidt couldn't really decide what career path she wished to pursue. Our guidance counsellors, after a private consultation between themselves, Rating - 812 out of 10 The Rolling Stones - Emotional Rescue How many bands need no introduction?" Possibly the most talked about album of the t past few months. Unfortunatley, the most controversial part of the album was not even ' included on it. I am referring, of course, to 'Claudine', which record company executives considered too hot too handle. (If "Some Girls" isn't too hot too handle, then I'd love to hear "Claudine". What is featured on Emotional Rescue, though, is good. We begin side one with "Dance- Part 1", which critics have already labelled as Miss , You" turned sideways (Ala Baby Talks Dirty and My SharonaThe Knack). It's a real kicker,, good dance music. The next song, "Summer! Romance", features some more of Mickf Jagger's saintly lyrics: I "Sucking Off the teacher and a tryin' ta gett an "A!" "Send it to Me' features a touch of reggae, 'Let Me Go' is a rocker, and 'Indian Girl' shows us some unusual (fori the Stones, that is) mellowness. Side two features more raunch and roll in t 'Where the boys all go'. 'Down in the Hole' is : defineltely bluesy, next is the title cut which,! unless you live in a cave, have probably heard already. Next is 'She's So Cold', which is the second single release. "I'm so hot for her and she's so cold," "I think she was born in the Arctic Zone" Once again, the Stones have proven that they can do it all rock, ballads, blues, and?; commercial nits ana ao u wen. wnn me possible exception of Led Zeppelin, they are the best of the still-surviving bands of the sixties. They are indeed our "Knights in shining armour". Rating -9 out of 10 fiA AWoK I suyyesieu viciuuia eiiiun in me luicaujf ;, program. Claudia, being an outdoorsy type, : agreed. Today she is gainfully employed in the forest industry with Kleinschmidt Forest Products, Inc., as majority shareholder. She is glad she consulted CNC's counsellors, as I she'd just inherited the company from her 3 grandfather and couldn't be where she is today without her CNC courses. The I counsellors agree, adding that for every person like Claudia CNC helps, a new feeling l of reward and satisfaction is felt by each of, the individual counsellors. I Going to school here has allowed me to! experience a lot of new feeling myself. Fori example, the feeling I obtained by patronizing the Canada Hotel. There is the' feeling I have while trying to impress a nice girl, and yet another feeling when she quietly told me that my fly was open. Also, the feeling I got when my math teacher did't give me sufficient time to complete my exam. And what about the feeling I got from eating, the "Cafeteria Special" too quickly? Right i about now I get the feeling that I should stop and ask my guidance counsellor how to finish this column. Confused? You won't be after next month's edition of - Soapbox.
