IVCF Mankind: Chance or Purpose? What "makes mankind so special? Why does the group of creatures with a cerebral cortex.and an ability to know and know that they know, have dominion over the other creatures of the earth. Five things can be said about man (Used here interchangably with mankind). 1. Man is a created being (Genesis 2:7,21-23). 2. Man is meant to obey absolutes (Exodus 20:1-17), 3. Man is increasingly complex in his ways of thinking; even Mankind cannot understand Mankind by itself; not through empirical, social, astronomical, or reiigious sciences. (I Corinthians 1:20,27). The fact that man changes over time through acts of thinking shows that man strives toward the Ultimate Complexity Aware of Itself, the answer, Jesus Christ! 4. Man, is not only conscious but reflectively conscious; unlike all other creatures of the earth, man knows and knows he knows. (Genesis 1:26,27). "Then God said, 'Let Us (He and His Son Jesus Christ) make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.' God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them (Genesis 1:26,27 NASV). 5. Man is capable of agape, or selfless love, loving others because of their need. Only Jesus Christ is able to love through motives 10 VISA l sgsjfyga? "Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God sent His only Son to be the propitiation for our sins". (I John 4:7-10, NASV). To be born of God is to be born of His Son Jesus Christ, to recognize and accept the free gift of life eternal through the God-man, Jesus who paid the penalty for mankind's refusal to obey God. Through Jesus Christ man can a) live with God forever (freedom from penalty), b) desire what God desires (agape love), and c) consequently man can be in obedience to God. Not only did Jesus conquer death, He shattered all myths about man's independence from God. Jesus Christ shatters the myth of man being the measure of all things (Humanism); He shatters the myth of man being able to have worthwhile values and to exist substantially without God (Existentialism), and Jesus shatters the myth of man-by-chance (the Big Bang Theory, Evolution from meaninglessness to meaningfulness by accident, or increasing consciousness complexity by fortuitous circumstances). All speculation survives or dies at the Calvary Cross. All theories and mythology are proven true or false by their relationship to Jesus Christ. Bahai's believe that Moses, Christ, tj Buddha and others have come to mankind as; Messengers of God, to help advance us to at higher degree of spiritual development. They i have been called Primal Mirrors because they v reflect the attributes of God, who s unknowable to mankind. These Prophets" have appeared at different times and inll different parts of the world. However, anyone J wno studies tne religions of the world canf discover that their teachings are basically U similar: love, truth, etc. Bahai s believe that J there is only one God, and therefore only one religion, the religion of God. fc Just as one grade in school gives us the'; necessary knowledge and skills to handle ;W the next, so each Manifestation of God' brings mankind a step further in itsll development. However, with the passage of fA time these Divine teachings become clouded r by the interpretation of man, and religions reach a spiritual winter. Although the events of the world seenn pretty shaky, there are Bahai's in almost every country in the world, and they are trying to build a New World Order. Baha u Hah has; told us that this is the aae of maturity and unity for mankind. Many people follow a religion in a cultural sense; that is, a Jew is a Jew because their parents were. An important principle of the Baha'i Faith is the individual investigation of truth. Each Individual must seek and discern truth fori themselves. f The Baha'i Campus Club holds informal discussions each Thursday from 1:00 2:00 p.m. in room 1-314. Bring your lunch. Leanne Boschman Around 1860 a Chicago store provided this set of rules for its employees: The store must be open 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. the yea round. The store must be swept, counters! shelves and showcases duted; lamps trimmed, filled and chimneys swept; pens made; doors and windows opened; a pailo. wafer, also a bucket of coal brought in before Breakfast (if there is time to do so) and attend to customers who call. The store must not bel opened on the Sabbath unless necessary and then only for a few minutes. The employee who is in the habit of smoking Spanish cigars being shaved at the tjarers, going to dances and other places of amusement, will surely give his employee reason to be suspicious ol nis integrity and honesty. Each employee must pay not less that $5.00 per year to the onurcn, and must attend Sunday Scho reguiany. Men employees are given one evening a week for courting and two if they go to Prayer meeting. After 14 hours of wort in the store, the leisure time should be spend in leaumy. i Reprinted from Sears Staff Newsletter!
