INFORMATION NON-RETURNING FACULTY Four instructors will not be returning to CNC next September. The four, Art instructor Ed Epp, Music director Kerry Stratton, Math instructor Ed Hutchings, and Surveying instructor Chris Langley have, after consultations with the directors of their various faculties, either resigned or will not have their contract renewed. All of the four were on probation which at CNC is usually a two year deal where-in the college takes a look at the instructor and the instructor takes a look at the college. With the exception of Epp all were in their first year at CNC. WHAT'S THE REAL STORY It is most unfortunate that we as Canadians are so often subjected to distored messages about the "Communist - Soviet" horde which supposedly threatens us. The United Stats spends a third (3313) of their budget on military expenditures to "protect democracy" from communism. Somehow that would lead one to believe that the majority of people in the United States are in favour of Vz of their tax dollar being spent on arms and military spending. I strongly doubt that this is the case. Although Canada spends far less on arms the process is also questionably democratic. Canadians, however, are subject to the same ideology and media picture which gives a cloudy idea of two enemies: the "free" west and the "unfree" east. The situation is in reality far more complex. We in. North America are given certain freedoms and those in the U.S.S.R. are given certain freedoms. In neither area is there The fact that these four will not be returning should not be construed as vindictiveness on the part of the administration but should be seen as a normal happening in this type of institution. The instructors are all evaluated by the directors of their instructional areas on a basis of student evaluation, personal interviews, checking of course content and preparation, and a personal evaluation by the instructor himself. In an average year 1 and 2 instructors will not be returning due to similar circumstances. The reason that there are 4 this year is that a higher number of new instructors were hired than has been the case in the past. In fact the percentage of instuctors that fail to return is probably about the same as usual. absolute freedom and neither area is totally right or wrong. What is important are the similarities between the ruling elite in the U.S.S.R. and the ruling elite in North America. When nuclear arms expenditures for the world is 25.6 for the United States and 25.5 for the U.S.S.R. one can assume that the average Soviet taxpayer - citizen, is also being told stories about the "enemy" without. In their case, however, the "enemy" would be the Western Capitalist horde. The question is: Are there really two hostile blocks doomed to military and eventually nuclear conflict, or, are there minority groups of ruling elites who stand to make a great deal of profit through arms production, and who don't really care about the majority of the people. I have never met a person from the U.S.S.R. who is overly hostile and wishes to subjagate me into being an irresponsible communist and I have never met a capitalist who is viscious and wants to convert me to a money-hungry exploiter of people. I have, however, met a number of THE SUNFLOWER A sunflower grows, and struggles, and reaches Battered by wind and rain. When the leaves open to expose the face, If follows the sun seeking the warmth and rays. The roots dig deeply into the good brown soil Keeping the stalk straight and tall. What happens if there are no roots? At the first strong wind' It falls over And never gets to follow the sun. The seeds of the flower form the face, Spirdling around the centre A universe in minature. The flower dies but the seeds live on Bringing new sunflowers to the world. We are sunflowers. The seeds are our words, actions and examples They live on after we die. But bring no fruit until Planted in someone's heart. by T.A. Fowler In many cases where an agreement has been reached as to an instructors non-returning the instructor will have a choice as to resigning or not having his contract renewed. In any case the positions will not be left vacant, the math, surveying, and art department will all get new people in September and the music department may get a full-time faculty member or part-time instructors will be hired, no decision has been reached on that at this time. In addition the Dean of Instruction, Don Anderson will be taking a one year leave of absence to teach in the marshall Islands. It is not known yet if someone from within the college will be replacing him for that year or if an outside person will be hired. Philip Mantler persons who consider themselves and their personal economic interest more important than anything else. There is not a threat of East vs West in the world today as much as a threat of rich vs poor. There is a threat of large scale selfishness and nar-rowmindedness doing harm to millions of people. Box Linner COPYING Most of you are probably quite blissfully unaware that the Free Press is the proud owner of a Gestetner copier which sits idle most of the time because we do not have enough work for it to do. We would be most happy if any students who have a large amount of copying to do and who cannot afford to get it done on a photocopier want us to do it for them. This service that we offer to the students is not free since it costs money for paper and ink. However, if you have more than 25 copies to make the cost can be less than to have photocopies made. An added benefit is that depending on the type of work to be copied the copies frequently turn out better than photocopies since there is ink flowing directly onto the paper rather than powder pressed into the paper.
