Prince George's Second Largest Newspaper rz rr THE PEE JPJSS For and by the Students of the College of New Caledonia March 4, 1988 Volume: 9 Issue: 11 No Charge by Ian Forster. Staff Reporter Last week, an interview was conducted with Frank Van Roode from Computer Services, who runs the BBS (Bulletin Board Service). This Computer Messaging System runs off OPUS LUTIN. a four megabyte fast and changeable computer bulletin board program on a IBMXT with a 30 megabyte hard drive, FIDO net mailing system. The system originated in 1981. for the use of Computers Using Educators in Prince George (CUEPG). The system was opened to the public as of November 1. 1987. The CUEPG is a collection of instructors from elementary, high school, and college institutions. According to the latest statistics there are 160 users and 2300 individual bulletin boards hooked to the BBS System. "Golden Kingdom." a popular board in town, due to its interactive games and the fact that a large portion of its users are kids, exchanges software with CNC Remote System. The mailing system can mail to all 2500 bulletin boards scattered over the United States and Canada. The system is free as a Quesnel bulletin board and CNC pick up the cost. The mail messages take anywhere from 2 to 7 days. This system also makes requests for files by sending a message to Frank, the system operator. It asks for a file and where it can be found. The system originally ran over the Vax system, but the users found it difficult to use. It also is running at about 23 of its capacity, and there are plans for upgrading. There are plans to link the system to the VT-100 terminals. The public networks available on the CNC Remote are: B.C. Chatter, which is based out of Vancouver; and Text, Pascal, and Pacific North West, all based out of the United States. The program supports the following systems: IBM, Apple, Coco, Macintosh, Atari, and Commodore. In order to log on to the CNC Remote you require the use of one of the above computers and a modem (300-1200 baud). You must dial 562-3632. which is not charged to you. Thanks to Frank and CNC. Prince George now has an educational tool, and a way for people to exchange software and ideas. mmwmt ' mRRm im kBL ' "'v, ' . -'-"f mfl Frank Van Roode. BBS system operator.
