The FYee Press Thursday, March 31, 1988 - 3 Recreation program getting back on track By Mandeep Binning The recreation program at CNC is currently run by Dr. Peter Usher, the instructor of the Physical Education Program. He is assisted by Dean Barnett. There were team sports until 1983 but they were largely shut down by economic cutbacks. A new program was started up in 1985 which Included fitness classes as well as the occasional tournaments -which were funded by the Student Association, if students could organize it themselves. That first year, the fitness class which has since increased to about 30-40 per class had an attendance of about 10 people per class. The tournaments were intermittent, as might be expected of student organized tourna ments. But in the spring of 1987, the CNC Student Association and CNC Administration got together and took up the subject of a recreation program, provided funding for it, and gave the Found - Money in the library in the week of March 13th through 19th. Rightful owner may claim it in the library by identifying the amount. Scholarship Fund The CNC Scholarship Committee is now in the process of raising money for Student Scholarships. This is being done through the 1st Annual CNC Endowment Scholarship Campaign - "Investing in Tomorrow". The Committee, a group of local businessmen, professionals, college personnel, and a student, has a goal of $50,000, to be raised by June 1, 1988. This target amount was established to take advantage of two programs that are currently in existence. Both the Provincial Government and the Vancouver Foundation will match, dollar for dollar, moneys raised by the Committee with $100,000 to initiate a Scholarship Endowment in perpetuity for the students at the College of New Caledonia. The Committee will be conducting a drive among the general public, businesses, professionals, and the College community for donations to the fund. If you have any fund raising suggestions, would like to ,make a contribution, or donate some of your time to this project, please feel free to contact any one of the following Committee members: Dr. Frank Lo Bruce Nirmal Rino Fornari 562-2113 584-1511, loc. 562-2451 457 Tom Fleming 562-2451, loc. 218 Don McGivern 564-2089 Gord Enemark 562-2131, loc. 340 Mike Bennett 565-3220 John Backhouse 562-2131, loc. 208 Lee Acott 564-7375 Charles McCaffray 562-2131, loc. 375 Lana Coldwell 564-1154 Stacy Perkins 562-7415 (messages) Wayne Jenkins 564-4436 Dean Barnett responsibility for running it to Dr. Usher; all this so that the program could be formal and consistent. This new program is less team oriented than the program in 1983 and is more concerned with opening up the college's facilities for the use of the students. For example, last semester there were softball, volleyball, indoor soccer, and basketball related activities. This semester we have had floor hockey, badminton, and indoor soft-ball, with walleyball just finishing up. Still to come this semester: a superstar's competition, which involves a variety of activities, as well as a tug of war. t t IT'S A MATTER OF LIFE AND BREATH DONT SMOKE British Columbia Lung Association The intramural competitions and intra-r college team sports have been exciting and fun, but this recreation program offers more than this. There is also the weight room, racquetball courts, as well as the gym itself and all the sports equipment which can be signed out by the students. All this is provided at no charge to full-time students. The only disappointment has been that the services provided are not being used by all the students.
