Smelted a skunk lately? What do you mean, "the proposed increase was acceptable to the majority of students"? I never heard of a tuition increase of any kind, let alone one of 7.5 I mentally fumed while reading the article in the "Citizen." Hit with yet another increase. The sea gulls of the world were congregating over my head; my rent jumped 25; I got 2 green peppers over the weekend and choked when I had to pay $ 1 EACH; and the Student Association (SA) says its okay to raise my tuition??? HA!! By the time I reached the SA office, my mental ranting and raving had subsided somewhat. Here's a copy of a letter the Student Association sent to the CNC board meeting: According to Cindy (the person you've met behind the SA office desk when getting you locker), here's what happened. Charles McCaffray phoned Cindy with the news of the proposed tuition hike and wanted a written response from the SA Executive to the Board within a couple days, so that the Board Agenda booklet could be compiled. I don't know why a meeting couldn't have been arranged for such a contentious issue, but for some reason, the five remaining executive members couldn't get together. However, Cindy did conduct a telephone poll (a telephone poll!! - is that even legal in the SA constitution??) of the the five remaining members and TO: '-ttfldtftf Jim Blake, Bursar, CNC RE: 1990-91 Tuition Fees after explaining to them that a 7.5 increase ("Minimum" says Vice President Jim Blake) wasn't all that bad, actually got a 3 to 2 agreement for it. (I'll bet they won't put the names of lhaldecision in the "Free Press"!) You may say that's not much, but you try living on student loans as many of us do. The government doesn't care if expenses go up because there is a ceiling they won't go past: For a single student $6800 and For a student with dependants $10,200. 1 ntjs wilii ' fiSm CONCERT OT'myrZ SAT. As my math teachers can attest, my calculations aren't all that hot, but here goes. The 7.5 is only applied to tuition fees, so let's take a look at the Calendar. For UT students, they say $77.00 per course plus $38.00 per lab. Now my registration form has: 3 sciences and labs at $115.00 $345.00 and 2 other courses at $77.00 154.00 which comes to $499.00 Now the minimum of 7.5 is applied to $499.00, resulting COLLEGE OF NEW CALEDON'.A STUDENT ASSOCIATION 2C----220C - 22nc AVENUE. PRINCE GEORGE" 3 C PHONE 562--7iir FROM: Cindy Hill, Administrative DATE: 11 January 1990 My rent takes 50 of the $6800 (at $420 per month), and when you deduct 2 semesters worth of books and tuition, there's not much left. I would suggest you grab a calendar and find out what your fees are going up by, and remember to double for semester, or triple for trimesters, to get the yearly cost increase. Vocational programs are not exempt either. For example there is a $63.45 increase in the tuition for the cook training programing. Everyone of us pays at least $25.00 per semester to the S A Unfortunately the Student Association Executive was unable to meet to discuss Mr. McCaffray' s request concerning the proposed tuition increase for the 1990-91 year. As well, we are currently holding by-elections to replace four of the -members who did not return this term. However, I have been in contact with the remaining council members, and although they are somewhat divided In their opinions, the majority feel that the proposed increase is acceptable. -and for what? To have them say they could care less for the students they are supposed to represent? That they couldn't stand a little pressure from the CNC Administration office long enough to sit down and think about what they were agreeing to? Haven't they listened to the radio or TV and heard that around the province some students are camping out in their college administration offices over a proposed 5 raise, and others feel so strongly about raising tuition fees that they actually get out and march in protest? What does our S A do? Rolls over and plays dead! What a bunch of spineless wimps! Campaigns are on for four new members to be added to the ones already sitting on their hands. Take the time to collar them in the halls, cafeteria, or classrooms, and express how you feel about the proposed hike. And while you're at it, ask them exactly what else they will do for you besides providing a place where you can get drunk! In case you were wondering how I feel about the proposed 7.5(MJNJMIIMD tuition hike: I THINK IT STINKS!!!
