Creation By David Mercer A trip back in time Staff Writer On at least one occasion in everyone's life, certain questions arise. These questions has been the basis of many religions and philosophies. For what purpose are we here? And by what forces and means did we come to exist in the first place? Primitive Lego of the Gods? Or was it something that started with the origin of the universe? Some people could easily point out the theory of evolution, as outlined by Charles Darwin, starting with the simplest of creatures evolving from the sea. Others rely on religion to answer questions such as these. Still others believe that the answer lies in a combination of divinity and science. Nowadays, people are generally beginning to move away from the confines of religion, and seeking answers to this and other questions through the use of mathematics and science. The search for where we came from starts by turning our telescopes to the sky, and our mind to the cosmos and to the beginning of Time. The beginning of Time, you ask? How can Time have a beginning? I'll try to answer that half-intelli-gendy. Ever since Edwin Hubble discovered that the universe was expanding in all directions, a new theory evolved.called the Big Bang theory. This theory suggested that the universe started in a massive explosion that sent matter reeling in all directions; an explosion that began with a singularity. A singularity is what is thought to be at the center of a black hole, a place where gravity is infinite, and space and time come to an end. Thus, if the universe started with a singularity, (the big bang) then we can assume that Time also began with a singularity. In-cidentaly, it is also reasonable to assume that the universe will collapse in on itself, in an event known as the "Big Crunch." But that is another story. Immediately after the big bang, (if not sooner than that) the universe began to cool, and it kept cooling until the existing matter began to ,xllllllllllllillllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll:-. As the universe cooled further, molecules were able to form; simple at first, then more complicated over time. Eventually, molecules formed that had the ability to reproduce themselves. These molecules then evolved into more and more complex organisms, with each successive organism being better and more adaptable to life than the previous one. At this point, Darwin's theory of evolution and random selection "kicks in," resulting finally with a species that is far too developed for its own good. Some people refuse to believe that we are governed by natural laws and events, without any hint of a creator. Others may simply not understand what the heck it is that I'm talking about. The truth is, there are no black and white answers. Both the beliefs of a creator and a big bang have their advantages and disadvantages. In the book, "A Brief History of Time," the author, r ' " pCS53-$''-'"'' & Stephen Hawking, sums up this discrepancy very well by saying: "With the success of scientific theories in describing events, most people have come to believe that God allows the universe to evolve according to a set of laws. However, the laws do not tell us what the universe should have looked like when it started- it would still be up to God to wind up the clockwork and choose how to start it off. So long as the universe had a beginning, we could suppose it had a creator. But if the universe is really completely self-contained, having no boundary or edge, it would have neither beginning nor end: it would simply be. What place, then, for a creator?"
