MHMEMKiafiaaiiajEsi STUDENT'S GET NEW COUNCIL By Patricia Davis -For those that didn't see the notice on the S.A. office window, or hear via the grapevine, the Student Association has newly elected officers are as follows: President: Shawn Petriw Vice President: Ian Forster Sports and Clubs: Dave Ledinski External Officer: Denise Joli Personally, I was surprised at the election of the last two candidates as neither appeared at the Candidates Forum. However, for those that won their election, congratulations. For those that participated and didn't win- at least you tried and are to be commended for your interest. -It was unfortunate that candidates' speeches had to complete with the music from Academy II. It was also unfortunate that Rules of Order were nonexistent, and "baiting" between candidates took up time that could have been more profitably spent in answering questions from the floor. -"Mature" students (and by "mature" I'm sure they meant the "oldies" vs. the "youngies") were showing a lack of concerncommitment to the college. This came up as a rebuttal of a question from the floor as to what a particular candidate was going to do for the multitude of them. In a later conversation I had with a successful candidate, he expressed surprise that many of the older students he approached during the evening class break were simply not interested in the S.A. or the campaign. It might help you to understand the "oldies point of view when you remember that their priorities are considerably different than those of the "youngies". For many of them, holding down 3 jobs (a career job, taking care of a family, and trying to further their education by taking courses in the evening) doesn't leave them much time for anything else. Besides, would you, as an 18-20 year old, feel better represented with a Student Council of 30-50 yr. olds, or with those of your own comparative age? wsswmswzmm Other concerns voiced will hopefully be tackled in committee meetings and since the new President and Vice emphasized the need for communication between the S.A. and the student body during their campaign, we should be hearing directly from them on a regular basis in the future. -As I'm sure most of you know now, the Faculty have a new contract with the College Board (as of Jan.6th) and have even had their celebration bash (Feb. 10th). Full-time salaries are higher (7 dec.'89;7 Dec.'90;3 Dec. '91) as are part-timers salary and benefits. Workload is reduced, Professional Development Funding improved, and the on-going contracts for sessional instructors on our regional campuses are also improved. There is even a guaranteed ratio of instructorstudent for the practical clinics in Dental Hygiene (15) and in nursing (18). Those on both sides of the table are to be congratulated on their settlement. -Did you hear that Sea Lions are fouling work docks at a pulp mill in Nanaimo? They apparently not only smell up the environment with their fishy breath and body odour, they leave deposits of excrement for the workers to shovel up. I wonder where they ever got the idea that turn-about was fair play? -An appeal!! To all areas of the college- for snipets of information, gossip, beefs or bouquets or whatever. We want to hear about those great Nursing parties and whether the Electronics department ever got their conflicting schedules sorted out. What's the latest in the "tooth" department and how many engines have the mechanics torn apart and put together, only to find extra parts left over? What about a fool-proof recipe on how to cook rice for bachelor students and can anyone confirm the rumor the the Geo-truckers are trucking down to Vancouver for a (oh yeah!)seminar? Where's your pride in your chosen professional field? Talk it up! Tell us! It doesn't have to be fancy - we just want to know you are there! Yum's Word.
