wma-Mii WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL When we think of a basketball game, we think of two teams of tall people, running back and forth a cour, dribbling and passing a ball, with the hopes that the ball will swish through a goop that is ten feet in the air. Now imagine the same game, but with a twist. Both teams are still dribbling and passing the ball in an effort to sink it through a goop, but now, each team is wheeling back and forth in forth in wheelchairs instead of running on foot. This sport is known as wheelchair basketball, and it has become a popular sport for people who are both confined to a wheelchair, and even for those who are not. Of course, some of the rules have to be changed; for example, one can't be called for foot faults, and one can't always be dribbling when trying to wheel a chair. Nevertheless, these wheelchair athletes have adapted exceedingly well, and the spirit of the game is very much alive. Anyone who likes sports can play. One doesn't have to be disabled, to qualify for a wheelchair team. Able-bodied people are needed to fill some of the positions of the teams, as there isn't always a large population of disabled wheelchair athletes in some areas. Each team player has a value of several points, in accordance to a medical scale of disability. For instance, an abled - bodied person has a value of 4 points, and a disabled- body can range from a value of 3 to 1, depending where on the spine the medical problem is apparent, with 3 being low on the spine, and 1 being higher up, near the neck. Thus, 3's are considered less disabled than l's, and any one team cannot exceed a total value of 13.5 points. There is no limit on age; anyone can play on either the men's or women's senior team over the age of 1 8, and there is even a junior leauge for young people interested in playing. Wheelchair basketball is a national sport , and B.C. has six different teams in the Cariboo Cup alone. The teams in the Cariboo Cup come from all over the province, from places such as Kitimat, Kamloops, Vancouver, Surrey, Fraser Valley and Prince George. The Cariboo Cud finals were last weekend. Our Prince George team, the Titans, did very well at the tournament- they won all six games to win the Cup, and now the Titans will go on to the Provincials that will be held in March, on the 23rd-25th weekend.
