The Webster's Third International Dictionary defines racism as; "the act or process of imbuing a person with a consciousness of race distinctions or giving a racial character to something or making it serve racists ends. Racism is also two more things; ugly and diverse. Ugly, because we see how the blacks were treated in Colonial America and how they are treated in South Africa. Diverse, because racism does not only deal with racial distinctions, but covers the whole spectrum of today's society. Cheryl McFadden Many students who attend "CNC" are students who did not take the prerequisites in high school that they needed to be able to enroll in an area of study of their choice. Among the students that come back are single mothers, married parents and single people. Each person has responsibilities that make attending school a little harder. When a single mother was asked how she manages her time when i t comes to school, she replied, "I go to school all day, when I come home I do my daily house-I am so tired by then that I don't feel like it." The same question was put to a married parent, " I get a ride to school Views on Rascism History shows us the ugly part of racism. In today's media based world television is the greatest tool for anti-racialists against racism. But what a lot of those anti-racialists fail to see is the diversity of racism. Every day, we may walk down a hallway, and we may see someone wearing clothes that are either unfashionable or too fashionable. Say that the person you pass was wearing unkempt clothing. Immediately, we cut this person down and think; "What a slob, I hope I never meet him (or her)." However, if the person is wearing wild clothes, and is a guy, and the person with my husband to school. I'm off at 1:30, but my husband can not pick me up until 4:45. I use this time to study. I spend time with the children before they go to bed, I insist on this time. After they go to bed I spend time with my husband studying." There are many ways that single students study. Some have to work outside of school and use this time to study. The single mother was asked if she thought that students without children had it easier. Her immediate response was, " yes! They don't have to take care of house, and a child and still find time to study, I usually end up pulling " all - ICBC- continued from page 1 New Rating Territories McCarthy also announced major changes to ICBC's territorial rating system which determines Autoplan premiums in different areas around the province. Instead of the present six territories, B.C. will be divided into 15 territories. As in the past, premiums charged for various coverages within an individual territory will depend on the claims experience in that area. Here are the new territories with percentage increases and decreases based on all coverages: -Caribou 1.0 - Lower Mainland 1.6 - Pemberton Area 2.2 Hope Area 2.2 Fraser Valley 2.5 North Island 3.3 Maple RidgePitt Meadows Area 4.2 North Coast -0.3 Peace River -0.8 South Island -1.2 Prince George Area -1.8 Okanagan -2.1 SquamishWhistler Area -2.5 Kootenays -2.7 Mid Island Sunshine Coast -2.9 thinking is a guy he immediately thinks; "What a fag, I hope he rots in hell!" However if this person were a girl, and it was still a guy thinking this, he would think; "Oooo-kay. She's wild, I wonder is she's as wild in bed, as the way she dresses." If it were a girl in the first situation seeing the guy in the wild clothes she would think;"He looks interesting. I wonder if he is as interesting as he looks," and if it were a girl in wild clothes she would think;"She looks like she could be a fun person, then again, she also might be a little slut" Aren't these examples of racism? I Who Has It Easier? nighters ". A married mother responded by saying, " I don't know. I wouldn't want to put people into categories, that wouldn't be fair. They have other responsibilities that take up their time." A single student commented, "No, I don't think so. Single mothers don't have it easy. They don't have the support of a husband, and they have to manage a household all by themselves, take care of the children and still find time to study." The married mother was asked if she had any advice for parents going to school, she said, " You have to remember to keep your priorities straight. When you are stressed out, it's so easy to take it out mean in the previous examples, the people who were doing the thinking were judging the' people they were looking at by the clothes that they were wearing, rather than by the colour of their skin. Most people would deny such a statement, but unfortunately, it is a sorry fact of life in today's society. I know that the above example is a very limited one, but it does prove a point. The fact that if we were not to judge people by their sex, the way they look, the way they dress, or the colour of their skin, wouldn't society, let alone the world be a much happier place? Think about it. on your family. When trying to understand something don't think that you are alone when you don't get it, everyone is going through the same thing." Trials and stress come in various forms. For some it's working, others it's children. No matter what the form there is always someone out there who is experiencing the same thing. Most people think that " the grass is always greener on the other side", but when you get there it wasn't a good as it appeared to be. So, who has it easier? The answer is no one. A - wtmm
