By Wendy Berg Almost everything we do as dental hygienists, is focused at preventing periodontal disease, which is the disease that destroys the supporting structures which are holding your teeth in. A major part of our training is learning to educate others about the importance of good oral hygiene and motivate them to brush and floss. Yes, brushing and FLOSSING, along with regular visits to your dentist are the keys to preventing cavities and periodontal disease. In education others, we have taught dental health in many of Prince George's elementary schools, and will be teaching dental health to several specialty groups this spring. We also provide oral hygiene instruction and nutritional counselling to individuals. In the first year of our training, we touch on many of the areas that dental assistants are proficient in, as well as doing courses such as Head and Neck anatomy, Human anatomy, Periodontics, Histology and Dental Materials. One class that was a lot of fun, was Pain and Anxiety control. Believe it or not, dental personnel are trained to minimize your pain and anxiety. The second year of training is much more practical in nature. We work on "real" people, rather than class mates. Our time is spent on applying and developing our skills. We provide free dental services such as cleanings, x-rays, fluoride treatments, mouthguards, and sealants. Anyone interested is welcome to contact the Dental Clinic at 561-5810, between 9 am and 12 noon weekdays for a screening appointment. A screening involves a brief medical history and on initial oral examination by dental personnel. Screening sessions are held on the first Wednesday of each month from 5 to 8 pm. Another way that you can support the dental hygiene programs, is by purchasing our 1990 Calendar. The proceeds from the calendar will be used for graduation, the purchase of supplies for the clinic so that we can provide our clinical services free, and for community projects promoting good oral hygiene. To My Teacher The ozone layer is disappearing Both air and water are being poisoned Corruption thrives within our society Paranoia rules us with a death cold grip Violence erupts in the streets Thousands are without employment Millions go without the necessities of life War entangles the world in blood and hatred We are perched on the edge of global annihilation And you're upset because I didn't do my homework !?!
