lR JOHN TOGYI OFFERS IS THE S.A. A SCAM? AN APOLOGY By Jennifer Hawkins Before I left this school, certain members of the Student Association brought certain injustices that I have wrought against the Student Association to my attention. I must explain, that my feelings towards the Student Association were shaped by the actions of Shawn Petriw, Ian Forster, and Kris Kitchen. It was those three that came in and wiped out our password program for our computers, and it was Petriw and Forster, who, now as it seems, acted independently in their threat to shut down The Free Press. So, it is to the members besides Petriw, 66 Forster and Kitchen, that I have to say that I agree with the concept of the S tudent Association, and I apologize. My apology is to Dave Le-dinski, Anthony Marotta, Denise Joli, William Miksh, Mantez Hothi, and Circun. Morao (I hope I have the last name right), and most of all Cindy Hill, the Student Association co-ordinator, because without her, we wouldn't have a Free Press, The Academy or Academy II, or a Student Association. Once again, my apologies! John Togyi SOCRED FLIM-FLAMMERY EXPOSED" by Mike Harcourt, Leader of the Official Opposition Bill Vander Zalm continues to hint at a spring election. But don't be fooled. He and his handlers have been forced back to the drawing board because the last straw of Socred credibility - the myth of its fiscal management - has been shattered. On May 1, the Auditor-General released his official audit of this government's books. His report was a devastating critique of Social Credit flim-flammery. It condemned the Socreds for mismanagement of our tax dollars. It exposed the Socred waste of public money on bad business deals like the Expo lands sale. It said they've been dishonest in reporting the results of their privatization scheme. And it said their budget was a far cry from balanced. In fact the Socred budget is running a deficit of over a half-billion dollars. The A-G's report confirmed the analysis of B.C.'s most prestigious accounting firm - Peat Marwick Thorne - who said the Socreds had disguised the true state of B.C. finances. That criticism was echoed by the president of B.C.'s largest accounting association, who called the budge "all smoke and mirrors," filled with accounting procedures no private business could get away with. What's been exposed is a government that has deliberately chosen to use deceptive bookkeeping in order to keep British Columbians in the dark. Let's be clear about what the experts say B.C.'s finances really are: A $500 million budget deficit this year No money in the B.S. fund A cosdy and dishonest privatization scheme A $150 million loss on the Expo lands. Only the Socreds could sell 14 of downtown Vancouver - one of the most desirable pieces of real estate in North America - and lose money on the deal. But what's been most telling is the Vander Zalm government's reaction to the Auditor-General's report. They tried to put the blame on him by questioning his integrity. They called him a bean-counter. They said the Auditor-General - your independent watchdog - had "his snout in the public trough.' We've come to expect this from the current government. The Socreds simply won't admit when they're wrong. That's why they won't withdraw their ads boasting of a balanced budget, even when they know such a claim is absolutely false. That's why the premier refused when questioned in the legislature to condemn the REAL women hate literature. And that's why the Bill Reid lottery scandal drags on. But the Vander Zalm government can't run from the truth. They're going to have to put their record of dishonesty and political favors for Socred friends and insiders before the people in an election campaign. And regardless of when that occurs. I believe British Columbians will decide Social Credit needs a thorough housecleaning and a spell in opposition to sort themselves out. On Thursday, April 19, the Student Association (S.A.)decidedthatthey would have a "Fairwell Dinner" at the Keg. The S.A. budget would pay for a $30 dinner for each S.A. members and a guest for each of the members. This would mean that the-S.A. would be spending up to $600 onadinner. Since the S.A. budget is funded by the activity fee that each student pays upon registration, this "Fairwell Dinner" will be paid for by the students. Out of the nine S.A. members, only six were present when this decision was passed: Ian Forster, Circunci-sao Morao, Denise Joly, Mantez Hothi, Tony Marotta, and Dave Ledinski. Circuncisao abstained from voting and all the other members agreed to the motion. However Ian Forster, who was acting as chairman due to Shawn Petriw's (the S.A. President) absence, stated that though he was in favour of going out for dinner, he would have preferred a less expensive alternative. The only reason why he motioned the idea is because he wanted to continue with the rest of the meeting and he knew that most of the other people present were in favour of the idea. It seems rather difficult for S.A. to justify such a decision. Dave Ledinski simply stated, "It's traditional." Is it really traditional for the S.A. to spend $600 on a "Fairwell Dinner"? Apparently, the S.A. treated themselves to a dinner at the Keg last year. However, Cindy Hill, the Administrative Assistant at the S.A., said that S.A. usually has a "Fairwell Dinner" at the Academy and every member brings something for the dinner. Therefore, it really is not traditional for the S.A. to spend $600 on a "Fairwell Dinner". S tudents who will be attending CNC next year should probably attend some of the S.A. meetings. Perhaps, with more student monitoring, the Student Association will stop spending student money so foolishly and wantonly and will start considering the wishes of the students instead. :y.w: J J .-.
