CANADA V2M 1T1 TELEPHONE (604) 563-6447 WE RECIEVED THIS IN RESPONSE TO LAST ISSUE'S April 24, 1990 i BITS AND PIECES" Dear Ms. Davis: We, the second year nursinq class of CNC, wish to respond lo recent comments made in the Free Press reqardinq Dr. Raymond Lo, and his Bioloqy course for nursinq students. We find such remarks to be unfair and unfounded. We have found Raymond's course to be foundational to our nursinq theory. We feel fortunate to have had the instruction of Dr. Lo--one who sought, and succeeded, to make learninq fun, to challenge us to new heights of academic achievement, and who freely qave of his time for outside instruction and extra lectures. We would aqree that Raymond's Bioloqy course, and thus, his exams, were challenqinq. However, many of us would also aqree that they were some of the best exams we had written--ones which truly tested our knowledqe, in a fair manner, structured as to eliminate free marks obtained throuqh quesswork. As a result, we find that we have retained more of his course material than that of other courses in our program. In conclusion, we would ask that, in the future, the writers for the Free Press would investiqate further, before printinq such derogatory and unsupported "rumbl i nqs . " Respectfully submitted, THE CNC NURSING CLASS OF 1990 IT WftS RBATlVEUf A GOOD DAY... v nr o& aQ , W ' y- " , "In Reply" by Patricia Davis Sincere thanks to all the Nursing students who took the time to express their concern (and rejection of) a paragraph in the last "Bits and Pieces". Throughout the past year, I've been astonished at the incredible apathy of the majority of students in this College: students who do not seem to care what happens within or about their college, or if they do care, cannot find the time to tell others why they care, or why they agreedisagree. "Too busy", I've had several say to me. I think it's absolutely marvellous that some actually did take the time to write me a letter and solicit signatures. In reply, I have only a few points to make: 1. The comments made about the multiple choice questions on Nursing Biology exams (NOT, you will please notice, about teaching quality) were heard two years in a row. Many of the comments were from mature students and therefore had (for me) more validity than if they were from 16 or 17 year-olds just out of Grade 12. 2. I did take it for granted (for which you've rightly rapped my knuckles) that the teacher's reply, if asked, would be that he thought the multiple choice questions were fair. However, you must remember that "Bits & Pieces" (which is henceforth to be abolished according to the Editor) was exactly that - bits and pieces: of talks to teachers, talks to students, my opinions and comments (as a student) on things affecting fellow students now and in the near future. In closing - the last paragraph of "Bits & Pieces" from the last edition of the Free Press, which was unaccountably "lost": Thanks to the faculty for their incredible patience and high quality instruction this past year. For those teachers leaving the College for greener pastures, I wish you well in your new endeavors. To those that are staying - have a relaxing and refreshing summer, and we'll see you in the Fall. For those students going on to other Colleges and Universities - good luck in your studies and chosen professions. And for those who still have a year or two here, see you in the Fall - and I hope you have a grand summer too. THeTeueac condom"... it will also weep YWR.
