r By Cheryl McFadden This is the story of an actual victim of sexual assault. She would like to remain anonymous. Any similarities in this story to that of your own or someone you know are purely coincidental. We'll call the victim Jane. You may have noticed that there are many victims of sexual assault. It catches the attention of newspaper and television reporters, authors and even movie producers. Usually what is portrayed through the media is a factual representation of the incident ignoring the feelings and emotions of the victim(s) involved. Authors and movie producers often over dramatize the incident or portray it from their point of view, this is what really happens . . . It was eight o'clock in the morning when the phone rang, Jane ran to pick it up. It was "Leslie", a good friend of hers that lived far away. It had been a long time since they had seen each other, and she was elated to hear her voice. Leslie had called to tell her that her husband, "Brian" was up on a holiday, when he had taken ill and had been admitted to the hospital. Leslie's husband was being released and needed a place to stay for the night. Arrangements were made for Jane to pick up Brian later that afternoon. The day passed by and it had come time to pick up Brian. Jane drove to the hospital and found his room. In Brian's room were some of his friends that he had been travelling with. He introduced them to Jane. Brian needed his suitcase from the hotel where he'd been staying. He asked Jane to pick it up for him while he got ready to go. He suggested that Jane take "Ben", one of Brian's friends, with her because he knew where to find the luggage. Ben and Jane drove to the hotel where Brian had been staying. On the way they talked about the city and how much Ben liked it. They picked up Brian's luggage and headed for the hospital. They made a stop at a friend of Jane's to pick up a camera that she had lent her. Across the street was an ice cream shop and it was one of the hottest days of the year so An Innocent Victim Ben decided to treat Jane to an ice cream. They drove back to the hospital and picked up Brian. Ben mentioned that he had run out of money temporarily and he wasn't sure where he was going to stay for the night so Jane offered him her couch, after all Brian and Ben were friends and she trusted Brian's judgement. Brian had to go back to his hotel to talk to a friend of his there about travel plans. Jane dropped off Ben here as he was meeting some of his friends. He said he'd call her later to let her know if he needed a place to stay for the night. Brian and Jane went home and had dinner and later that evening Jane received a phone call from Ben. He said that he was meeting some friends for a drink and that he'd like to come over later, but he needed a ride. Jane was using her roomates car and she didn't know if she's be able to pick him up. He said he'd cal 1 back later and let her know if was going to come over. Earlier in the day Ben had expressed an interest in meeting Jane's roomate, "Chelsey". Chelsey came home from work and Jane had told her about Ben needing a ride and wanting to meet her Chelsey told Jane to go pick him up and he could watch movies with them. Jane called the hotel to let Ben know that if he needed a ride she could pick him up but Ben was out, so she left a message for him. Later Ben returned the call and Jane went to pick him up. She asked Brian if he wanted to come, but he had just taken some pain medication and was going to bed. Chelsey said that she was awfully tired and she might take a short nap. She told Jane to wake her up when she got home if she had gone to sleep. Earlier that evening Brian had told Jane that Ben had said that he liked her. Jane was not interested in Ben and thought that this would be a good opportunity to tell him. She arrived at the hotel to pick Ben up. As he got in the car, it had appeared that he had a little to much to drink but he was not drunk. Jane approached Ben about what UWU) "imUU'iLMtt! 1'T"" he had said to Brian. Ben immediately was embarassed, but he insisted that she should like him. Jane could not get it through his head. She had stopped the car at a street light and had tried to kiss her, Jane turned her head away and told him no that she didn't want that from him. He kept pressing her and she got angry and asked him what he wanted from her. He said that he wanted to make love to her and Jane's immediate response was that was something special and she wasn't about to do it with someone she had just met and had no feelings for. He left it at that and Jane thought she had finally gotten it through his head that she did not feel the same about him. She headed for home thinking that he wouldn't bother her anymore there because Chelsey would be there. They arrived at Jane's apartment and Ben went to the bathroom, while he was in the bathroom Jane went to awake Chelsey. Chelsey was very tired and wouldn't wake up. Jane was unsure of what to do. She didn't want to be alone with Ben because she felt uncomfortable around him. She called her best friend to see what she thought she should do, but her friends phone was not working. Jane sat down on the couch and put a movie on trying to figure out what to do. Ben came and sat down beside her, he tried over and over to kiss her. Jane's heart was racing with fear. What should she do? He had moved very close to her and she was forced to lean against him from the lack of room on the couch. Ben moved backwards and she lost her balance and fell back, he tried to kiss her and she thought if she let him kiss her once then that would be enough and he'd leave her alone. She felt very uncomfortable with and told him to stop it, and he did. He whispered in her ear that he wanted to make love to her. Jane said she didn't know him and that he was moving to fast. She got up and moved to the other end of the couch. She put her feet up to watch the movie. Ben made his move. He leaped on her and she froze with fear. She told him to get off of her, and he wouldn't, she said, "No Ben, please don't do this!". She was humiliated and ashamed and feared that someone would find her that way, so she didn't scream. All she could manage in hear state of fear was to tell him no. He told her to be quiet or someone might hear them, she said she didn't care, to get off of her. (The details of the actual act are too explicit to print.) He eventually got off of her. Jane sat up and told him to get his shoes on, he was leaving. She was afraid that he might lurk outside her apartment if she just told him to leave so she decided against her better judgement to drive him back to his hotel. On the way there Ben tried to tell Jane that she was a willing partner and she should not be sorry for something that they both wanted. Jane was very confused and wasn't sure what had just taken place. All she knew was that she had been forced to do something she didn't want to do. On his way out of the car Ben told her not to tell anyone. Jane agreed to this as she felt very humiliated and didn't want anyone to know. She dropped Ben off and drove away. She appeared to be in shock and started to cry profusely. She drove aimlessly and somehow made her way to her best friends house, "Carole". Carole was very concerned and wanted to know what had happened. She knew that Jane was going to pick Ben up and concluded that he must have done something awful. Jane just cried and Carole asked questions, but all Jane could muster was a shake or nod of the head. Carole consoled her some more and made arrangements for Jane to pick her up and go to the hospital (in the morning). Jane did not want to go at all, so the compromise was to go in the morning. Jane drove home. When she got there she went into Chelsey 's room and explained what had happened. They both sat on the bed and cried. Jane was emotionally and physically drained so she decided to go to bed. She awoke very early as Brian was going out of town and she wanted to make him breakfast and see him off. She went through the morning as if nothing had happened. She said good-bye and left to pick Carole up for the hospital.
