1 An Innocent Victim Cont. Jane was in shock when she arrived at the hospital and really did not connect with reality. Her doctor asked her what had happened but all she could do was cry. She told them that she was not going to report it to the police and she didn't want her parents to know An exam was preformed to check for any sexually transmitted diseases. She did not consent to a forensic exam, which is done for the purpose of evidence. She did not feel it was necessary, as she was not going to press charges. A few days later Jane had started to get in touch with reality. She broke down and told her family. Her father was very upset and immediately called the police. Since Jane was not a' minor there was nothing they could do unless she reported it. A couple of days after what had happened she received a phone call from Ben, she reacted with fear and hung up on him with out talking at all to him. This is what made her decide to call the police. A female police officer came to see Jane. She explained the process of filing a complaint and she was very helpful in giving her the phone numbers of some professional people that deal with that sort of situation. Jane decided the next day she was going to press charges. The police officer wasted no time. She took a detailed statement from Jane about what had happened. She also took one from Carole as she was the first person that Jane talked to after it had happened. Ben was called to the station for questioning when he arrived he was arrested for first level sexual assault. He spent one night in prison and was released with a promise to appear before the court to enter a plea, guilty or not guilty. Jane is getting on with her life. She seeks counselling to help her deal with her emotions of wh?it happened. She often wishes that it had been a brutal sexual assault because at times she feels like she brought it upon herself and if it had been brutal, there would be no questions in her mind. The case has not gone to trial yet. It has been sent to the crown counsel's office for review Unfortunately, because Jane had not consented to the forensic exam there is no physical evidence of the assault. This may be a problem, because the crown counsel needs a case that can be proven and with no such evidence it would be Jane's word against Ben's. It's a frustrating process but one that has helped Jane deal with what had happened to her. It has given her the opportunity to do something about it. I l Jul -5HINintn by .a ir..
