Some Basic Mac Principles Part 5 The Macintosh computers are designed to be the easiest to use computers. Here are some general tips on how to get the most from them. Microsoft WORD 4.0 1 . To run a program such as Microsoft WORD 4.0, make sure the system is on. This is very important. Believe it or not, power is required to make these damn machines work. The Mac will proceed to boot (startup), and you will be met with a screen that has several icons (pictures) on it. Using the mouse (thingy with a button on it and a cord), move the pointer (the arrow) over to the folder (it really does look like a file folder) labeled "Application?. Click the mouse button twice in succession on the folder, and you will be presented with a list of files. The program you will most likely want is MSWORD 4.0. Double-click on this item (Click on it twice in succession (Don't you LOVE computer terms?)), and Microsoft WORD 4.0 will run. You will now see a screen with a window (an area with a border around it) labeled Untitled"!. START TYPING STUPID! BTW, (By The Way) That's what the keyboard is for. 2. If you want to save your work, hold down the key called CONTROL, which is located between the Option and the Space Bar, and press the 'S' key. Sounds simple, huh? Control-S. (Gee that'll be hard to remember, S for save? Nah. It'll never catch on...)You will be asked to enter a file name (something forthe file to be called reatherthan Untitledl ). Enter your filename, (BUT wait! There's more!) You have to tell the program where to put your files! Move the mouse up to the item that looks like a box with a folder beside some name, and hold down the mouse button. The folder will open to show you a few titles. Move the mouse down to the one that says "SYSTEM FOLDER" and release the mouse button. Nowgo to the item in the larger box, anddouble-click on the title Personal files, then on the title with your name, or any area you want to put it in. (eg. Stories, Layout) Click on the SAVE button, and viola (Yes VIOLA not Voila. None of that French shit here.) From now on during this session, now that the file has been named, eventime you press CONTROL-S, the file will be saved with that name automatically. You won't have to enter the name etc. every time. 3. To Print, hold down the CONTROL key and press the 'P' (P for print). You will be presented with a requestor (a small windows requiring you to do something), and click once on the OK button. If you really don't want to print, click on the CANCEL button. 4. To get the fancy stuff, see: HOW TO USE THE BASIC MAC FUNCTIONS Coming soon to a wall near you. Please note: The folders represented here only refer to the folders of the CNC Free Press. IbyE.T. This is my first time at writing a column, so I here we go. E Movies Darkman-Well, if you've seen Bat- f man and Phantom of the Opera , it is essentially a mixture of both. This movie is so predictable that it's pitiful. Save your money; wait for it in video. Flatliners-Excellent. Being a fan of , anything to do with what happens when we die or anything weird might make me a little biased. Anybody would enjoy this movie. It's very believable jand leaves you on the edge of your i seat. It really makes you think Go i see it. i Men at Work Not bad. A good way tokillafewhours. Basically it's about two garbagemen who find a dead body on their route with a few plot twists thereafter. Predictable wait for the ,video. Ghost-Excellent movie and a hell of a tearjerker. The perfect one to take a date to. When I went, there were about fifty girls crying when Patrick S wayze bit the big one. Kinda choked me up, too. Go see it! f Top Stuff Arachnophobia Very good and well done movie. About a bunch of poisonous spiders. The big guy from Roseeverything from heavy tunes like "Monkey on my Back" to the mellower "What it Takes". Pump has been out for about eight months, and it is still selling quite well. The song "Janey's Got a Gun" reads like a book as it tells about a girl who has been abused in her childhood by her father and gets revenge by killing him. "Monkey on My Back" is about how drugs can screw up one's life; sort of what happened to the band before they went straight on their last album,Permanent Vacation, back in '87. Great Tunes, great lyrics Buy it! Heart-Brigade It's okay. The band has a few good songs on this album but they're starting to sound the same from album to album. This band has been around for twenty years now in many incarnations yet always including the Wilson sisters. Not a bad choice for tunes....Buy it! Led Zeppelin-Physical Grafitti I know that this is an old album, but it's a classic. If a person wants to get an earlier feel of what Robert Plant and his comrades sounded like buy this album. It's a double set but it's worth every penny. Hard Rock Faith No MoreThe Real Thing Definitely different! Has a wide variety of musical style (hard and soft),don't pass this one up. Joe Satriani-Flying in a Blue Dream-This instrumental album has excellentguitar licks and lots of rhythm. Other of his albums highly recommended for good background party tunes. Steve Vai-Passion and Warfare A unique album along the lines of Satriani, with his own type of sound. Also good party tunes. Dirty Looks-Turn of the Screw Keeping up with the rockin' sounds from their previous album; you won't regret buying this one for your collection. Television It's the beginning of the new fall season on the boobtube. Yawn!! There are a few good shows being offered, but why are they put in bad time slots? For instance, there is a new show called The Flash which critics seem to like but guess who it is up against Cosby and Bart (Simpson). Gabriel's Fire is also an excellent show but it is competing against Cheers. I guess the only way to get around this dilemma is to use your VCR to tape one and watch the other. Here is a list of shows to watch: Star Trek: the Next Generation Cheers Married With Children Arsenio Hall Show Fresh Prince of Bel Air SA Hopefuls Daniel Lansall I feel that the four years I've served on theFREE PRESS more than qualifies me to work as an overseer to the FREE PRESS.
