'The Canadian Multicutluralism Act became law on July 21, 1988. This Act recognizes the racial and cultural diversity of Canadians. It says that every Canadian has the freedom to enjoy, enhance and to share his or her heritage. And it says that all Canadians must have equal opportunities and must be treated with the same respect (Multiculturalism and Citizenship Canada) Multiculturalism week is a time set aside for activities that are designed to highlight Canada's multicultural heritage. Across the country groups like Prince George's own Multicultural Society provide workshops on topics like race relations, as well, many groups host food-fairs and folk-fests to encourage better understanding between the people of different cultures. Ken Attafuah, the program co-ordinator for the Prince George Multicultural society feels that 'Canadians "...lack a general understanding of the superficial and cultural differences that separate us," and therefore "we tend to be afraid of those differences and the Attention! people who embody them." Attafuah adds that understanding those differences often leads to the realization that those who are different do not constitute a threat to our interests, and therefore we can begin to appreciate and accept them Since the end of the second world war people from around the world have been immigrating to Canada because of its international image as a nation proud of its multiculturalism. These people come to share in the wealth of opportunities available to all Canadians regardless of their ethnic or cultural background. Immigrants bring with them the new ideas, skills, and viewpoints that are necessary to prevent the stagnation of culture, these qualities will be useful in building a stronger Canada. At a time when it appears that Canada is being torn apart by separatists and regionalist interested only in what "Canada can do for them, and not what they can do . ..." it is critically important that we recognize, appreciate and celebrate our cultural diversity, rather then Is your CAR BATTERY DEAD? Well hold off on calling a tow truck The Academy has a set of jumper cables. (and if you ask nicely we might let you use 'em) attack each other. By taking the time to try understand each other we will learn that not only is peaceful coexistence easy, but it can also be profitable, profitable in the sense that a co-operative, united, multicultural Canada can be administered more smoothly and fairly, and cheaply then can be the disorganized group of loosely-tied, in-fighting provincial governments we currently call a nation. Canadians are unique internationally be-cause of their belief that multiculturalism is a fundamental part of their nation. While internally, Canadians alienate each other (or worse yet emulate Americans) in the search for an identity, globally it is our respect and tolerance for each others differences that is our national identity. Canada is a country rich in diverse cultures for all 365 days of the year, and though multicultural week is an effective mechanism to promote improved race relations it is only meant as a way of "jump-starting" the processes of tolerance and understanding that should be used all year long.
