The Native Students Club by Velda Horning At the beginning of the academic year Doug Brown and Joanne Coombes, the Co-ordinator and the Native Student Advisor for the Native Education support services helped set up and organize the the C.N.C. Native Students Club. Brown and Coombes have stepped aside and let us run things, but are still available to hep us sort out the details of organizing events. If a Native Student needs help in any way, both Doug Brown and Joanne Coombes are very easy to approach. If they can't help you they usually blow who can. The C.N.C. Native Students Club owes these tow a thank-you. Now to get on about the Club. The purpose of the Native Students Club is to provide the Native Students with an opportunity to meet other Native Students (there are a lot of people from out of town in the Club). We have a members from Bella Coola, New Aiyansh, Manitoba, Rivers Inlet, Fort St. James, Burns Lakc.you get the idea. The Club also helps us organize native and student events that we are interested in. We have elected ;our executive body; President Jimmie Glover, Treasurer Ben Haizimsque and Secretary Christine Dawson. As you can I have appointed myself the Public Relations person. We have set about trying to bring ihe public to awareness about our Club and hopefully increase membership. We are operating a pretty informally right now, as we are doing our best to improve our system. Due to the positive reaction to Glover's presentation, we will be holding a Luncheon for the C.N.C. faculty, so we can present to them what we have done and what our future plans are. The members will be bringing in traditional Native foods. We will also be holding;holding a Christmas banquet for the Native people in the area (including C.NC. students). Our President has signed up for a team for the snowball competition put on by the Students Council. We have started our Thursday night video showing at 7:00 pm in room 2-723, which we have twice a month. We are also planning a bake sale. The Native Education Support Services has reserved room 2-723 from 12:00 to 4:30 pm on weekdays. The room contains a computer (donated by C.N.C.), a typewriter, a small couch, tables to work on projects and coffee provided by the Carrier Sekani Tribal Council, which we collect a donation for cream and sugar. Often you will find students in our drop-in room, but if you don't Joanne Coombes or Doug Brown can tell you about our club. Watch out for meetings and Video showing on our bulletin board, located on the first floor, underneath the library entrance. December 12 I'M Happy, You're Happy Newshoes Canada-1990 Dir. By Jason Richards j Silence is the sound of nothingness that greets "! us when our sense of hearing registers no sensory . input. Silence is familiar to us all. It is a time' when our brain can relax; thoughts can flow freely and uninhibited into our conscious awareness. Silence can usually be found where intense concentration is required, such as in tennis,-powerlifting, chess, operating rooms, and the list goes on. Quiet is also found all over the world, form Asia to Canada and in places where coriglomerarions of books are found. The places are called libraries. Sadly enough this world wide hush has not found its way into the library at CNC. As a rule the CNC library is a place to socialize rather than study. It is a place to research what happened last weekend and to delve into current school gossip. This behavior is healthy and important since we as humans are social creatures, but it should be done outside the confines of the library. If students want to socialize they should go to the cafeteria where the environment is condusive tp such activities. Institutions such as UBC, U Vic, and SFU, all have quiet libraries, Is it because the administrators of these schools understand that, to set high academic standards, the library should be a place of silent study? Or do these institutions have .qtiitjibraries because the students there are much more considerate of each others needs? More than likely it is fpr both these reasons that there is not a constant din of conversation the libraries of higher institutions of learning. The CNC library should be a quiet environment would encourage students to perform, and the degree to which students perform is directly related to the marks achieved in school. Since students, on the whole, try so hare to get good marks wouldn't itmake sense to have a place to go that helps student to get better grades? A place that would giveCNC students and edge, markwise, when applying to larger institutions? The fact that the CNC library is not a quiet place to study is everyone's problem. But it's the responsibility of the librarians, as caretakers to enforce the age-old, tradition of silence. The librarians should demand that students respect this tradition so that CNC can have a decent library in which to study. If the Librarians do not have the power to enforce silence then it is up to the administration to give them the power to make the library a viable option when students want to study. The library at CNC is and exception to the norm when it comes to atmosphere and environment Why? This question is one that must be answered on a individual basis. Hopefully in answering this question, you will try to make a difference in the volume level at our library. for a reply look page 5.
