f Pure and Gandharvas by Birgit Allgaier, staff writer Two hot bands are coming to Prince George? When I heard that, I was certain it was too good to be true. I figured it was a rumour similar to the one circulating early in the year that the Doughboys were coming. But, no! Pure and the Gandharvas really did come. They played at the Overdrive and tickets were only $8.00. It was really too bad that Pure didn't have a band opening them that was a little less cool than themselves because they were a real let-down after the no less than awesomely groovy Gandharvas. Pure played and basically that's all. They were quite boring lacking the soul necessary for a band to have during a live show; not to mention they were quite visibly Music, Movie and Book Reviews by J. Verheul, and D. Bliss Well it's a new fall semester, so we figured that the first thing to do is clean , house. The first order of business is "that we have changed the format. We are no longer reveiwing three CDs an j issue, what we are doing now is a CD, p a book, and a movie per issue. Second thing is that we have changed the rat-' ing system from last year. For those of you who read the reviews and their ratings last year I don't need to tell you how screwed up they were. We have decided upon the standard Rolling v Stone rating system and will base it on the music (or book, or movie) itself, not on how it rated in compari-' son to the sick little games last year's reviewer was into. Lastly, until we wrangle up some sponsors, we will be J reviewing things that we have pur- chased with our own money, hopefully k within the next couple of weeks we j will have this fixed. With that all taken I care of.. .into the reviews! Seeing that is is a new start and all, is we figured that the first review of the year had better be a good one. So the music reviews for this year are going to get off to a better-than-average start by reviewing the new Tragically Hip drunk. Pure may as well have been in a recording studio for the show they put on. It seemed as though they were too afraid to really get into their songs. I must say, however, that they did f eCieve a most demanding encore from the mosh pit. Mosh pit??? There were people moshing to Pure? What's going on? This wasn't a Ministry concert. Definately the same kind of crowd that moshed to Hothouse Flowers, Crash Vegas and the Tragically Hip at last year's Another Roadside Attraction. Definately very uncool. But the Gandharvas; what a band! Opening with an excerpt from the Dead Can Dance, the Gandharvas began with some exciting drumming on three overtuturned Heinz tomato ketchup cans which were held together with electricians tape. The band was great. It was really obvious to me that this band was really stoked to. be on stage. The lead singer has an almost haunting voice and the bassist was so into his music that he continued to play even when his bass strap fell off three album (that's right, we can still call them albums) "Day for Night". So as to not bore you with mindless prattle we'll get right down to it - THIS IS A FANTASTIC ALBUM ! Every song on this album is ereat. While this album is a different sound from their previous release "Fully Completely" (MCA Records, 1992) it is by far thier best yet. With songs like 'Yawning or Snarling', 'Scared', and 'Grace, too', these guys show why the Americans are idiots for not having caught on to this band yet. So go buy this album immediately upon reading this and have a listen for yourself. The Tragically Hip - "Day for Night" i2 Choices in movie entertainment are pretty slim in this town, so we figure that any help we can give you to choose which movie to see is proably apreciated. The movie we are reviewing this week is "Time Cop" starring Jean Claude Van Damme. As far as action movies go, this one was only o.k. The premise is that time travel is invented in the future, and to prevent abuse of this new technology the time police are started. Van Damme, our hero, is sent back in time after the villain, eventually defeating him after a number of cliche action scenes. Aside from a lack of plot, it's still a Van Damme movie and therefore worthy of some applause. He may not be a character actor, but he can definitely fight believably. Overall, we would have to rate this movie average.. .as opposed to the bad movie it would be without Van Damme. "Time Cop" This weeks book -is Clive Barker's times in one song. Drunk or not, these guys really know how to put on a show. They didn't stand -en stage swaying slightly like Pure did. They jumped "Books of Blood vol. 1". The "Books of Blood" is a collection of short stories bordering on the obscene and horrific. With stories such as "Midnight Meat Train", "TheYattering and Jack", and "Pig Blood Blues" the first in the series of six books is one of the best. If you think Stephen-King is a baby, and you need something'td really disturb you, pick this one up.. .then the Video review The Crow by D. Ohori, staff reporter Well, Hello. This being my first review, I feel I should maybe introduce myself to my readers. I am a guy. So, onto reviewing. Insted of totally knocking a movie from my opinion of it, I'd much rather discuss the ups and downs; the pros, the cons; the good, the crap; from a totally non-biased opinion. The Crowr featuring the late Brandon Lee,(I won't say "starring Brandon Lee" 'cause I don't think he was really much of an actor) is a medium paced action thriller that was released on video two weeks ago. This movie is well worth seeing, (if you haven't seen a movie in 20 years and every other video in the world is already rented out). Although the only half-decent actor was the crow, the action and cinematography were very impressive. In the movie, Brandon Lee plays an average Joe who is engaged to his girlfriend. Both of them are bru THE FREE PRESS Wednesday, October 13, 1994 5 and jumped and jumped some more. Now they had soul! POP MM (OIHT by J. Addison, staff reporter Season premiere. Consume. (Don't you just hate when people are brutally murdered because they are late, with their rent). But hey, of course when it's true love, nothing can keep people away from each other, not even death. Ohhhhh, doesn't that just make you tingle, (like you're gonna spew) So Brandon Lee awakens from death to avenge their murders.
