10 THE FREE PRESS Wednesday, October 13, 1994 Editorial by D. Bliss, staff writer We are not even two months into the school year and the government has already decided that it is not quite met it's yearly quota of bad to stupid decisions. On Wednesday, October 5 , a memo from the Chretian government was leaked to the press. It was proposing a 7.5 billion dollar funding cut to social programs and in particular has proposed DOUBLING existing post-secondary tuition rates. That's right , boys and girls, take whatever you are paying now and double it. This is not only an outrage but a blatant insult to any and all students. From the moment we enter high school it is drummed into our minds to continue on to a post-secondary institution and get an education. Most of us see the writing on the wall; namely, if you don't go to university or college then "have fun working at McDonald's for the rest of your life. " Many students, myself included, go on to collegeuniversity not just for this reason but because we want to expand our minds. The Government also encourages us to get some form of post-secondary education, but from the moment of acceptance to the purchase of your last textbook, the real truth becomes evident. Mainly, to go to a post-secondary institute be prepared to sell a kidney when you get there. The costs of tuition itself in general is not so bad, but is the other costs, such as housing, food, and basic necessities that cost so much. These are the costs which make paupers of us all, except for those lucky enough to land a rather large scholarship or whose parents can afford to help with the costs. The average student today struggles to make ends meet on a daily basis. By doubling our tuition the Government seems to be saying that ' Sorry, one kidney wasn't enough. We'll be needing the other one.' This is simply unacceptable. We are here to get Degrees, not find out how much we can work during the week before we collapse from exhaustion. Of course, there are always student loans and grants one might argue, but this simply does not hold up. Student loans are much harder to qualify for and several million dollars worth of grants, bursaries, and scholarships are left over each year not because no one bothers to apply for them but because very few can apply for them as they're so obscure.
