10 THE FREE PRESS -Monday; November 14,.'1904 ' New albums soon to be 6I5COMBE ROAD released by Kevin Scofield, staff writer The wait is finally over! Pearl Jam's new album, titled Vitalogy is coming out. Although rumours have been floating around that it's being released in November, it won't be out until December 6. The band has been through a lot this last year, fighting with Ticket Master and firing their extremely incredible, divine, holy-s!t-you're-good drummer. But they've finally talked their label into letting them release it before 1995. Again, there probably won't be any videos, but you never know. Hey! Maybe they'll even tour this year. Wouldn't that be great! In promotion for the new album, the first single is being released sometime in the beginning of November. By the way, the new album is an import, meaning it is not being distributed in Canada. So if you want to make sure you get a copy, special order it. Nirvana is also releasing it's MTV Unplugged show on CD this November. Featuring live songs from all three of their albums (Incesticide is just a rarities), and special guests the Meat Puppets, it's sure to be a great album. Cobain's dead, but the music's alive, and so is DGC's greed for making as much money as possible from the band. Finally, Grapes of Wrath fans will be thrilled to know that Nettwerk Records is releasing a "Best Of album, filled with their classics and hopefully unreleased tracks. It was a tragedy when the Grapes broke up, and unfortunately Ginger isn't quite as good. So keep your eyes open for the new albums. by A. Hooper When I was asked to attend the English Lecture Series and interview Cecil Giscombe, I almost panicked. I had never done an interview before and I must admit I was a little nervous. Mr. Giscombe is a writer and an English professor at Illinois State University where he teaches creative writing and African American Literature. I felt a little overwhelmed. But as we started talking about the grizzly bear maulings in the area I felt a little better. We discussed the wild life in the region and when the snow was off the road so that he could get back on his bike (He rode up from Vancouver to PG on his bicycle in 1991. An adventurous undertaking). So this published writer and English professor was not a bad guy. Who says English has to be boring! His poetry publications include: -Postcards (1977) -At Large (1989) -Here (1994) There is another book in the works entitled "Giscome Road" which will be published later this year. When Mr. Giscome found out about a small settlement that went by the name of Giscome, he decided to do some checking. The town was named after John Robert Giscome, a miner and prospector. Could the founder of this small community possibly be a relation? As it turns out he probably isn't but nobody is certain. It is an intriguing story. Mr. Giscombe will be in Prince George during our spring semester on a Full Bright Scholarship. He says he is looking forward to being in our great city of P.G. He will also be doing more research in the matter of John Robert Giscome. So go to the English lectures. They are very interesting and you just might learn something new. MUSIC, MOVIE AND BOOK REVIEWS by J. Verheul, and D. Bliss Ok....It's the third issue and we are almost into the swing of things. Our format is solid, our review system is in place, damn, I think something is missing. What could it be? You guessed it, sponsors! We just can't seem to get any takers. A third issue paid out of our own pockets. Sorry, no book this week (John's a little behind in his work), instead, we have for you two movies. Hopefully in the next week we'll have something solid, until then, on with the reviews: MUSIC Sinead O' Connor " Universal Mother". DERYK: I will admit that I was leery going into this. I am not the biggest Sinead O' Connor fan in the world. On this album, however, I was pleasantly surprised. The first single, " Fire On Babylon", ( an angry attack on her Catholic upbringing) is great. After listening to that song I'm convinced this women has the best voice in music today. Other notables include " Famine", a telling of her version of the great famines that hit Ireland in the 18th century, a fantastic cover of Nirvana's "All Apologies", and " A perfect Indian". But the album is a little repetitive. All the songs seem to sound the same except for the ones I mentioned before. Overall this a good album and Sinead O' Connor fans will definitely want to add this one to their collection. If you've never listened to her before this a great album to give Ms. O' Connor a listen. I'm giving "Universal Mother" three stars out of five. JOHN: Here we go, violent bias alert. Despite my liking the first single, the song "Fire on Babylon", it alone can't make up for Sinead O'Connor herself. I just don't like her or any of her past musical offerings. Admittedly, I may be selling her a little short. This album is better than the last, but in order to protect you, the consumer, I have to warn you about crap. The only good thing she has ever done was ripping up a picture of the Pope on national television. So, with this all in mind "Universal Mother" gets the big two out of five. Sinead O' Connor - " Universal Mother" (Chrysalis EMI, 1994) l2 CINEMA Stargate Kurt Russell, James Spader, Jaye Davidson D. Mario Kosar DERYK: The Mario Kosar machine Terminator, Terminator 2) gets rolling with this latest science fiction offering to start off the highly competitive Christmas movie season. The story revolves around an Ancient Egyptian cover stone found in 1928. Underneath is a device that no one has ever seen before. The Stargate. In present day the army and the archaeologists are trying to figure the thing out. The army re-activates Russell( Tombstone ) and the archaeologists call in Spader who conviently deciphers the signs on the wheel that none of the other archaeologists can. The gate gets opened and the army sends the team headed by Russell and Spader to find out what's on the other side. They find themselves on a world that represents Ancient Egypt ruled by the ever androgynous Davidson ( The Crying Game ). This is a rather pointless acting vehicle as there is no acting to do. This is a science fiction movie that means effects and Stargate delivers. The natives of Stargate even speak Egyptian instead of conviently speaking English. However, the plot is paper thin and the story would go nowhere without the effects. Stargate is a movie with great homages to the Ancient Egyptians and even to the Star Wars trilogy ( there's even an Ewokian village and a George Lucas ending). I give this movie three stars out of five. JOHN: I loved this movie! The cast was excellent, the special effects we amazing, and the art direction unbelievable! I personally think this outweighs the silly acting and the dopey plot. James Spader plays the half crazy scientist, and Kurt Russell plays the grizzled, emotionally bent commando. But growing up with movies such as Star Wars, these sort of thin characters are near and dear to my heart. With these two extremes, the excellent effects, and the crappy plot, to find a to find a rating we are forced to average the highs and the lows. I give this movie four stars out of five. Stargate 12 Frankenstein Kenneth Braghnagh, Robert DeNiro, John Cleese d. Kenneth Braghnagh DERYK: Having read Mary Shelly 's book, I went into this movie expecting a overdramatic, oversensual adaptation. This js afterall the same group who ruined Bram. Stoker's Dracula a few years ago. With Frankenstein, however, the job is done much better this time around. The cast is excellent with Braghnagh starring as Victor Frankenstein. He makes a good driven scientist and really does bring the frenzied pace of Dr. Frankenstein's experiments in the novel. John Cleese takes a different role as the doctor who nearly accomplished what Frankenstein eventually does. Cleese is great in this rare dramatic role. The real suprise is DeNiro who potrays the monster with all the emotions and character of the monster in the book. As John will tell you, this movie kept us in our seats the whole time and I didn't think of leaving at anytime either. If you liked the novel I think you will find the movie good as well. If you haven't read the book, its a good bet you will find it enjoyable anyways. I am giving Frankenstein four stars out of five. JOHN: Frankenstein, all in all a pretty good movie. Not having read the book, I don't really have anything to compare it to except the old "Bolts in the Neck" Monster. The fact that the monster looks truly scary is enough to make this movie superior to it's predecessors. The cast is really good, they even manage to express feeling, but like all movies, there must be some suspension of disbelief. At a whopping two hours long, I didn't even think of leaving my seat, and at the Odeon, that stands for something. I give this movie three stars out of five. Frankenstein j2
