You know he had that booth outside of the cafeteria offering us that alluring free mug if we only applied? Something for nothing is almost too alluring. Like when I went to Sears to buy pants for work, and the cashier offered me $10 off my pants if I applied for a Sears card. I figured, well, for a student, or any ii one for that matter, 10 bucks is 10 bucks. Then there was the free cookbook with the Bay card, or how about the Christmas tape with the Canadian Tire card? Or how about buying stuff you don't really need just to get air miles? You could also consider the punch cards offered by most coffee places too. You buy a certain amount and you get one free. HMV in Vancouver is another example. Like if you buy a certain number of CD's or tapes at a certain price, you get one free. All I'm saying is buyer beware. Think of all the cash these guys are raking in if they can afford to give away all of this free stuff. Keep in mind that college students are a major target area. So, I decided to pump it full. I was still trying to overcome my fear of self serve, so I pulled into one of the many full service stations in town. Checking my wallet, I found a lonely loonie. Hmmmmm, I thought I might have a problem. I asked if they had Interac, they responded affirmative, so I asked them to fill 'er up. When I used the Interac machine I was told my card wasn't going through. Problem, I'm thinking! So I used my charge card. I prefer the Interac be I cause I don't have to worry about paying it off later. Anyway, when I took cash out of my account the next day at the ATM, I appeared to be short. I went to the bank and discovered my Interac card had in fact gone through! As it turns out I payed for my gas twice that day! When I informed the gas station they were more than happy to reimburse me. But, consider this, sometimes you don't keep track of all the money you go through in a week and may not notice if you are a few dollars short. This is just a bit of info for us students, we need what little cash we have!
